misfires

Ok so I had an issue this morning and fixed it but I thought I would pass this along so that all of you know that even those of us with a good background can have issues lol. I started my car today like normal and about 5 mins into driving was getting a mild backfire, knowing this was odd I put it to the back of my mind with the intention to check it once I had time. Almost go to work when my check engine light started flashing and the misfires got worse, sounding more like a gatling gun than a car lol. So I pulled her into my shop popped the hood and started searching. I removed the cap and inspected my wires, rotor and cap, all appeared normal. So I went to reassemble and then move onto other things when I happened to notice 1 of the bolts for the cap was slightly off angle. I inspected it and found a crack where the thread meets the shaft (damn previous owner) I then checked all 3 of them. 2 of the 3 were cracked and not holding the cap on tight. So I cleaned up then cap contacts and got 3 new bolts from my bolt supply here at the shop and now I am good to go. So keep in mind guys that sometimes the simple steps will lead to an annoying problem so check the simple stuff first, a random misfire may indicate a loose cap.

Re: misfires

Too bad two of my bolts to my cap are broken. Lol. Guess I should drill 'em out. Although I haven't had any problems with mine. Thanks for the advice. I've been there with the small things causing massive headaches plenty of times. Never hurts to double or even triple check your work before you start the car back up.
