Hey, what's the best paper filter that filters the most and smallest particles of crap out of the air before it goes into the intake system? I have been using Purolator air filters. Their premium air filter(Pureone) isn't available for my '99 Civic just the classic.

Anything proven better at catching smaller particles?


I'm not very interested in oiled filters like the K&N.


I am looking for the best filter that will help my engine last the longest.

other than pureone, the napa gold (wix) is one of the best. thats all i used when i had stock intake. i would not recommend oiled cotton gauze type filters at all due to very low filtration (92% when new). most papers are over 99% and wix is rated at the top. i would also recommend oiled foam filters if anyone makes it for your car. we are talking about dense cell foam with a sticky oil that filters as well as paper and flows better. i think amsoil might have some panel filters for certain cars.

You should be good with the Puralator ones. They get the job done for a decent price. Just make sure you don't change them too often, though. Air filters work best halfway through their life cycle, and by changing them prematurely can do more harm than good.

Do paper air filters eventually start to pass particles if they are too dirty?


I tend to rotate the filters 180 Degrees when one side gets dirtier than the other (maybe after 10K mi) because the air pipe is on the side of the air box and so most of the air goes through one half of the filter. I try to wipe down the box when I do this.

i would recommend changing paper air filters once a year. you shouldnt be using them so long that dirt builds up. but as far as passing dirt, usually you will notice it on the other side if it happens. a good quality filter should not do this unless you keep it too long. the paper filter flows the best when new, then flow rate will steadily drop as it fills up with dirt. filtration rate should stay the same.

I just put in a Wix in my 2007. It had a new type of filtration media that was much thicker than any other I had seen before.

The original filter was 3 1/2 years old and only about 50% covered in dirt which was not significant because the car was still getting good gas mileage, up to 33 mpg with mixed highway and city driving. The car had 27,000 miles on it.

Change the air filter whenever it needs it and that will depend on your driving situation and mileage. One year change interval is not needed if you do only 10,000 miles a year, and not nearly enough if you do 50,000 miles a year in dusty mid west or desert dust storm conditions.

i guess it depends where you drive. i clean my foam filter every 6 months and it looks pretty nasty. if i wait a year i start feeling power loss.
