Basic Tune-up

Dear Honda Guru's

How do I tune up a 2000 LX with a 1.6? It is a four door with 81,000 miles. I have recently been put in charge of the care and well being of my girlfriends Honda, it needs a lot of help.

I understand what type of parts I will need, but I am not sure of a few things.

Will I will need to buy a timing light?
I am not sure of what type of ignition that Honda has.

What type of socket am I going to need?
Any special tricks that I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance

Re: Basic Tune-up

if you are doing a tune up then that means;
air filter replace is necessary
fuel filter every 2nd yr (I do it once a year)
fuel injection cleaner once a year
new plug wires every 2nd year
new plugs once a year
new cap and rotor every 2nd year
You do not require a timing light to do a basic tune up unless you want to check it. If the timing belt has a lot of miles on it then replace it before it breaks same for accessory belts (look for cracks on the inner edge of the belts) You will need metric sockets for most of the parts a 10mm is quite common on these cars as well as the standard spark plug sockets.
Oil changes every 5000 km or 3000 miles
if you opt for a synthetic oil then every 4000 miles if the engine is in good shape.
Keep the engine bay clean and fix any oil leaks that you find. Also while your under the hood check the condition of the engine grounding straps and battery terminals, make sure they are all clean and tight.

Re: Basic Tune-up

Thank you for the advice. I am used to jeeps and they use 80's tech to make them run. I was just worried that I would need to reset the timing after changing the cap and rotor.

Thanks you have been a big help.

Sincerely,

Re: Basic Tune-up

Make sure the spark plug socket you use has a good rubber insert to hold the plug. It's a long way down there!!
