My First Post! Questions...

Hey all ..

I just bought a 1997 Civic CX Hatchback a little while back, and I've done a couple of fluid changes .. ie brakes, oil, transmission.

I have a couple of items I'm wondering about that maybe you guys could help me with:

When my fuel level gets to below half (more like a quarter or less), the engine takes a few more cranks to get started. I'm thinking fuel filter, or fuel pump, or maybe fuel injection? Any input or if this is a common problem, are there common solutions?

I have a rattling hood. Again, if this is a common problem, what is the solution?

Thanks!

Re: My First Post! Questions...

I have the same thing with my 00' EX. When I asked my local mechanic he explained that basically when you turn on the car, your fuel pump pressurizes the fuel system. When you have less gas in the car, it takes a little longer to get the gas where it needs to be. He also said that when your fuel pump gets older it can take a little longer to pressurize so that also could be a contributing factor as well, but overall not a big issue. Just like as humans get older, we aren't as spry as we were 20 years ago. Same thing with cars. How many miles are on the car?

Re: My First Post! Questions...

turn the car to ON position and leave it for a few seconds before cranking the motor. it will pressurize enough that starting should be normal.

Changing the fuel filter would probably help a little. It is a often overlooked maintinence item, it should make your engine run smoother.

agreed...when I bought the car i swapped out all the filters.. i dont think the previous owner even changed any filters at all for the 70k+ miles that he had it....was almost as gross as my oil catcher with two dead mice in it...
