Does the cars computer record the mileage and if so is there a way to retrieve it?

Just bought a 2000 Civic CE with 104k miles on the odometer. Ordered an AutoCheck report and it shows the car getting an emissions test on 05/31/2007 with 135k miles listed. When I called the previous owner he denied any knowledge of tampering and said it must have been recorded wrong.

Anyway to verify what the actual mileage is?

unfortunately, most if not all civics record the mileage in the gauge cluster. swap to a different one and the mileage will change. altho if it puts your mind at ease, odometer mistakes are very common and happen alot because car shops dont care what goes down. alot of times they just want to fill in the space and move on to the next page. same happened to our accord with 95k miles they put something like 125k and now it always shows up on the carfax reports. and everyone is too lazy to do anything to put it back. i never take those carfax or other history reports as meaning anything. usually they never include the big problems that are important.
