I have a 96 civic ex and i have a fluctuating warm idle. I've put on a brand new idle control valve, throttle body gasket, 02 sensors, and my computer is working fine it seems. I have bled the coolant and checked for air leaks. Anyone have any guesses to why im still having this problem? It only happens sometimes when the car is warm like it has to find the idle for a minute then it settles. car drives fine.

Could be a vacuum leak somewhere, bad TPS, clogged injectors. I would run fuel injector cleaner and check all vacuum hoses first. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Yeah i really wanna check all the vacuum hoses. Can you name me all the places that would affect idle from these? could it be from anywhere? or just the throttle body area hoses? I have a new pcv valve , fuel filter, and spark plugs too, i forgot to add.

Make sure your PCV valve is properly hooked up to your intake that could create vacuum leak. Make sure all plug wires are on good. Did you gap the plugs properly? Just look at all of the hoses coming off of your intake and make sure they are all attached to something and are not worn/deteriorated/cracked. Give em a little tug and see if anything is falling apart or coming off. A good inspection should always be the first step. Run some fuel injector cleaner additive that's good to do every once in a while anyway.

Fuel injector cleaner does nothing. This problem is not fuel related. All my hoses look new still. No cracks, no wear, still clean . Car is very well maintained by me. Nothings been tampered with that i wasn't confident i could do. Could a random up down idle that fixes itself after several restarts be computer or ignition related? The car starts and has always started well... What i wanna know is why starting it a few more times makes it go away eventually? and if its an air leak wouldnt it be consistent? Please answer these questions.

I cannot tell if you are saying that fuel injector cleaner does not clean injectors. Or that you tried it and it didn't work. But if you think it doesn't do what it is supposed to then you are wrong. I used it on my bronco and it fixed a problem that sounds exactly the same as what you are experiencing.

Bump, for real help to actually answer my questions, not share personal experiences unrelated and argue.
Injectors dont cause a fluctuating idle, maybe an air leak in one could, but thats been ruled out in my injectors and throttle body, and fuel injector is not strong enough to clean a real injector clogging, not to mention most injectors dont get clogged unless a vehicle is not taken care of , in which case i stated mine was , if you had read it.
What i wanna know is why starting it a few more times makes it go away eventually? and if its an air leak wouldnt it be consistent? Please SOMEONE ELSE answer these questions.

Ok, you are a douche. That is real advice, that is completely related to the topic. I am sorry that I said you were wrong, but grow some thicker skin. Some cars just need fuel injector cleaner every once in a while no matter how well maintained.
If you know so much, then why haven't you fixed it already? Why even ask for advice on a forum?

Hey mad dog, you tough internet hero. What i did was a basic tune up. Ever heard of that? Did i mention an engine swap to fix an idle problem? Na. but you mentioned fuel injector cleaner haha. You're telling me to run fuel injector cleaner to fix an idle problem and calling me a "douche" and trying to bash me for doing a general tune up on my car. I noticed you post on EVERYONES posts with lame attempts at information to problems just to try to rack up lots of posts here. I know you're offended and angry that not everyone in life is going to believe your dim witted information, but i'd be very shocked to hear that YOU actually know what YOU'RE doing. There are many things that can make the idle fluctuate even something with fuel related. You came on here wanting advice about this and people gave you some and you had to get up his *** that its not fuel related but someone says that it could be the evap system. The evap system is fuel related if you kno anything.
Since you have done alot of things and have done the usual tune up. The thing that is left is the TBS, vacumm leaks, fuel injectors, or it could be the evap system like said above. And fuel injectors could be it even if you say it cant. If the engine is not getting enough fuel the engine could rev itself to give it more air and fuel to keep it running.

I asked a simple question about air leaks being possible to be intermittent or if they ALWAYS would have the same effect throughout daily operation? If an idle only fluctuates sometimes (rarely), would this still be considered a possible air leak? wouldn't an air leak always show itself? Thats all i need to know. Thanks.

all basic checks have been done. I've used fuel injector cleaners in the past...didnt fix it... i have checked the sensors ranges...all in range... coolant bled....lots of stuff. just looking for a new place to try. injectors have been pulled out and cleaned through mr injector..pro service.. this is why i jumped away from that aspect. i'd rather discuss the problem than try to explain my supposed errors.

You could have cleaned them but there is still the fact that one of the injectors can not be working and opening fully just saying. And with a vacuum leak it can go both ways. The leak will always be there leaking at all times but it could cause the idle to bounce and also it could have the idle always up at a constant place.

You are right I've never been ASE certified. Cars and bikes are just my hobby and Jets are my job. I guess you would know more about cars with your ASE certification. That's why you already have your idle problem fixed.
