low idle
I have a 96 civic ex with a 167,000 on it and the problem I am having is that when I am at a stop sign or red light the idle drops to about 200-300 and the car starts to shake, also like it wants to shut off. I have a feeling that it might be the icav but is there anything else that might cause this ? When the car is in park the idle goes back up to about 600-700.
Re: low idle
Hi,
My 2000 Civic hatch is having similar idle issues. It runs fine when cold, but when fully warmed up, the idle drops low and the car vibrates. This is a hatchback so no tachometer. But this thing sounds like it is idling around 400 rpm. Mine has 140K on it and I have replaced the air filter, changed the oil every 3500 miles with Mobil 1 since it had 30K miles on it (bought it used). I have also replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor about 30K ago. It had a timing belt replaced at 90K miles. I also replaced the O2 sensor when it caused the check engine light to come on. At present, the check engine light has not come on and the car has as much power as it ever had. The automatic transmission shifts fine and the car does not surge or anything while driving. I tried adjusting the idle screw under that rubber plug. I can speed it up, but it doesn't hold. The ECU seems to realize it is a little fast and just slows things down to where it shudders and just seems too slow. I have sprayed the throttle body with a sensor safe throttle body cleaner. No effect either. I did a code check at the local parts store and nothing. Is there some component in these cars that can cause this? The engine has even compression and is otherwise in good shape. No burning oil or noisy valves. In fact, if you open the oil filler and look inside their, everything is so clean you could eat off it. Major stupid question here, but are these cars prone to catalytic converter issues? I know that sometimes they plug up and cause issues. There is flow out the tail pipe, but that doesn't always mean there isn't a partial restriction. Anyway, I too am experiencing this idle issue. Any of you Honda Civic experts got any advice on what to try? Thanks in advance!

Re: low idle
well i was having an idle problem with mine also, i changed the fuel filter. plugs, cap and rotor, coil, and then the ignition control module and my wires looked new, checked them they looked good then i noticed a small pin hole on them changed the wires and the car has run like a raped ape ever since. oh i even cleaned my cat out and that didnt seem to help till i fixed the wires, if you dont wanna break all the honey comb out then go on ebay and buy a test pipe and that will let you put that in stock location, if your in a state with emissions them get a new cat, im in oklahoma so we dont. hope this helps
