K20a Engine Help and Questions

Wat up everyone!!

Just a couple questions. I am definitely putting a k series motor in 2000 honda civic coupe here very shortly. I am kind of wondering should I but the k20 from the honda integra dc5 from japan that has 220 hp stock or should I buy a k20a from a rsx type s from the states which I believe are between 160and 220 stock. I think the base model rsx has the k20a with 160 hp.

The difference is the k20 from the dc5 in japan is 5 grand and I can get a k20 with 160 hp from the states with the 6 speed trans for 1-1500 dollars. I have the 5 grand to buy one but what do you all suggest just spend the 1500 and just build up the motor or buy the other one? I can get a k20 from the states from a rsx type s for like 3000. Which do you all suggest would be the best route? I really need some advice before I go and spend the 5 grand and find out I could have went a different route and saved some cash but also added some massive power gains.
Thanks.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

USDM K20A2 must have more than 160hp right? anyways that motor is a beast. I would stay USDM. You could also go with a K20A3 which is out of the "ep3" SI. Make sure you do plenty of research on each engine and the parts available before you dive into a build.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

The k20a is over rated especially with the price. The k20a is the fastest of the k series but the k20a2 is just as good. Ya the k20a has 20 more hp than the k20a2 but with that extra money you have you can reach that easily and have alot left over. The k20a3 is a good motor but its the weakest of the bunch and really doesnt have vtec as people think. Your best bet with a k20 is the k20a2, it is a very powerful engine that can hold its own and the vtec in it is crazy.

You can also choose to swap a k24 in your car as well. Either the k24a2, k24a1, or the k24a4. The k24a2 is the best of the k24's which comes out of the TSX. The other k24's come out of a accord and the crv. The k24a2 is very good motor especially for bolt ons and NA. The k24a2 has shown alot better gains than the k20a2. There is also the choice of swapping in a k24a1 with the k20a2 head. This combo comes out to be very well especially since you steal the vtec head of the k20a2. The best thing bout the k24 motors is the torque range on them. Just my 2 cent.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

Thanks bros much appreciated!!! Been doing some research but obviously not enough. Just got into the import scene just a little over a year ago. I used to be one of those muscle car guys that were ****** to imports thinking they aint got ****. Well now look where I am. LOL. Gotta love imports. I am into everything now. I thought about the k24 but I thought it might be a little more of a pain because it comes out of an accord. But ya I will definitely look into the k20a2 and a3. Also gonna look into k24s for that torque. Thanks Again. If anyone else gots some ideas throw'em at me. Ill keep everyone up to date on what I do in the end.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

The k24s are the same as swapping in a k20. I am getting ready to get my k24 build a going. I am going with the k24a1 with k20a2 head. I have a ep3 which comes with the k20a3. The only thing I need to do the swap is a ECU and crv passenger side mount.

The best thing about the k24a1 is you can get it for really cheap. I think the k24a2 goes for 1800.

I hope you know all the work you have to do to swap a k series into your car. Its alot. You have to get the sub frame of a ep3 or dc5. You have to get the wire harness, ecu, dc5 shifter assemble, shifter cables, motor mounts, fuel pump, and I think there is a couple more to that. But with all of that its going to be bout 2 to 3 grand.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

Ya I got it all priced out. Im ready for whatever it throws at me. I am tired of this sohc. I have put in 4 different trans. The first one the police didnt know how to drive, and the last three the company told me they all worked properly and all three of them had problems with the third gear and I cant find a manual anywhere on how to take the trans apart, and i can only get it open so far then it stops. I just can't wait to have some more power added to this car, it will be one badass machine once I am done. Good luck with yours. Ya my exact price on parts to install it is $2,143.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

That price seems right for the supplies. But ya you want power and you will feel power for sure. I have a couple buddies that have swapped in k series in there ej's and damn them cars are mean.

And thanks I will hopefully getting my swap in bout 2 months. So far i have a couple things already sittin and waitin for her to get here. When I get her I am going to break her down and rebuild her before I put her in the car that way it willl be easier. I have put camshafts in my car before and man was that a pain in the *** to do it with the motor in the car. Hopefully when i get done she will be bout 230 whp. Just going NA for now and trying not to get her to fast cause got my little boy in all.

But ne way good luck with your swap and take your time with it. Dont get into a hurry. Make sure you do everything right.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

IMO BOOST! K20 swaps are expensive, not sure what you have but if its an si with a b16 build All motor then boost talking the same price maybe cheaper and putting out more power to the wheels. The prices i have gotten on swaps for a k20 are ridiculous where i am your talking 6 g's but JDM don't know price difference on USDM.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

He probably wants something dependable to drive. It could be his daily and if he boosts it then it wont be as dependable as stock motor. The price for him to turbo the car will be bout the same unless he goes with ebay turbo but I do not recommend that cause they are not that great, they are cheap and you get what you pay for. A turbo kit for his car could be bout 3 grand and he will have to think about an ecu and tuning and maybe some head work. He can swap in a k20a2 and put bolt ons and be the same hp as his boosted motor. And his stock motor will be more dependable than the turbo.
Plus if he ever wants to turbo the k series it will be a hole lot more powerful.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

Ya I really at the moment dont want any boost. I like the whole NA scene. Plus its just an ex so only a sohc vtec. I have seen some guys that can get around 400-516 horsepower with a sohc but dont want the chance of it breaking. But hey I bought the civic a year and a half ago with only 50,000 miles on it 5 speed, for 3 grand from a police department. You cant beat that price. So ya I would prefer a k series motor. Buddy has an rsx type s pushing just over 500 horsepower. Its insane. But thanks anywayz. Plus 02civic02 is right its basically my daily driver. Til I buy a s2000, or a honda cbr600rr.

Re: K20a Engine Help and Questions

Ya i probably should put in a better cam too add some more power to it before I install it. Smart idea I think ill do that also. Buy hey if you want to check and see what my civic looks like. Its a work in progress obviously I just started doing things to it this winter when I was in my off season so no work for me for three months so I got boried. Planning on a new paint job also black hood, black grill, black roof, and black trunk, and obviously everything else silver, plus headlights jdm black, and taillights also. Dont like the taillights that much they came on the car looking for the same set thats on there but just black housing.
