Unhappy 98 hatch battery drain issue

My civic's having a problem holding a charge. It seems like it drains even when the car is off. The 4 way flashers also come on at times when the car is off/no keys in it and when you push the 4 way button when its doing this it makes a weird buzzing sound. The car generally stays running, but sometimes the lights will dim, the tach will stop working and it will start to stall out unless you hit the throttle to keep the rpms up. or just die all together.

It needs a jump almost every time to start it.

- Its a 5-speed, d16y7
- I tried a different battery, no difference.
- Tested the alternator with no issues
- Checked the fuses
- Car used to have an alarm but it was removed, could be something to do with that
- Has an aftermarket deck, alpine if its important.
- Has a remote start that doesnt work.
- Only option the car has is a/c

Would appreciate some suggestions on things to look for/what could be causing it.

Thanks,
Scott.

Re: 98 hatch battery drain issue

well check this out there is a serouis short in your dash look for it soon because your car could catch fire and bye bye civic. you said your hazards come on.sounds like its near your hazzrds button.check the wiring under the dash near the fuse panal were your alarm is hook up the remote start if not installed correctly could have an effect on the car BIGTIME ecspecialy when you pull fuses out from .the alarm if your alarm was made by DEI they use relays little black boxes that connect wiring some times they go out and if removed improperly your car will not start.my bet that you have a grounded wire touching a hot wire is ther any smoke or smell. check for crispy wires on your hazzard control button CHECK ALL WIREING

Re: 98 hatch battery drain issue

No smoke or smell, but I ran through my wiring and found some shifty things, seems the previous owner saw himself as an electrician. I removed the alarm and remote start, and the sub/amp wiring and everything seems to be ok now, although it still needed a jump to start. I'll see once i drive to work i guess. Thanks for the help.

Re: 98 hatch battery drain issue

The battery still seems to be draining when the car is off. I added some distilled water to it and unhooked it while I'm at work. I'm thinking i'll borrow an ampmeter off my buddy and see if the batt is using any power while it's off.

Re: 98 hatch battery drain issue

My advice. Text the battery before starting the car to see how many volts you are running. Then start the car(jump if needed) and while at idle continue to test the battery to see if you are gaining power. If your not you know you have an alternator problem meaning your alternator isn't charging or charging your battery enough to maintain power. If it is you know that the problem isn't with the alternator but maybe a connection of some sort? Diagnose that when you get there. Find out if your alternator is alright first.
