Tranny pops out of 2nd gear - newbie and I did a search!
Hello,
First post here, many many posts on other car forums so I know to do a serach which I did but couldn't find anything related to this generation of Civic (1998 EX 5-speed manual). Pops out of 2nd gear fairly regularly (more when warmed up) and also grinds severely at times going in. Pretty much to the point where you just try and by-pass it. So, here's my questions, based on one conversation with a local one-man repair shop:
1. Sound like it's for sure an internal (i.e. non-linkage or mounts) issue?
2. Is this a common issue and what's the usual fix?
3. Is this tranny easy enough for an experienced (but not on Civics) DIY'er to R&R themselves? Plenty of tools, jacks, garage space, etc. just not any special Civic tools.
4. If there's no easy/usual fix, is going to used trannys (Craigslist, wrecking yard, U-pull-it) a good economical choice or should I go for getting this fixed (i.e. am I taking a huge risk with a used unit)?
If you know of a post that answers most of this, please direct me there if you can. As I said, I did several searches and only found one that pertained to a new type of manual tranny.
Thanks!

Ok, no that is not common. If it just started doing this a repair was in order but since it's been happening a while and is now grinding...it's a bit too late. Just buy a used transmission from a reputable salvage operation and it should come with a warranty.
