hopefully simple drumbrake Q
hopefully simple drumbrake Q
Ok I have a 96 civic ex with rear drum brakes. I go to do the simple task of changing the shoes in the rear and run into some problems. The car had been sitting for a few weeks and in that time, even though the e-brake was not pulled, the rear brakes locked up. I beat them with a sledge and got both sides open and completed one side, but on the other side I can't for the life of me get the drum back on. I did adjust that arm in the middle as short as it will go, and the e-brake cable doesn't have any obviously recognizable adjustable points. I did by the way try to compress the pistons, and now have run out of ideas. I don't know much on the subject but would least humbly say am mechanically inclined. I'm stumped and on my last leg, any help would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance for any replies.
Re: hopefully simple drumbrake Q
before you go readjusting the handbrake cable be sure that you absolutely have the right brake shoes! never ever assume that you have the right parts as the parts guy will sale you anythings. try another brand. it is not uncommon to use some sand paper to remove a bit of the brake pad but you shouldnt have to. have you removed the lip from the inside of the drum? use a bastard file to remove the lip.wash the drum and use brake parts clean to remove the grease from both the shoes and the drum. did you back spin the star wheel to its shortest length? it could be the main reason the drums not fitting over the shoes.
good luck.
good luck.
