Ok so I just recently purchased a 96 civic ex coupe and love it. I just noticed to day that my climate controls are all haywire. Here is a list of what they are doing.

1. fan speed control only works at 4 or off. nothing in between.
2. selecting upper vents only - only the defroster vent works
3. selecting upper and lower vents - upper vents by windows and lower vents blow air
4. selecting upper and lower vents with air circulation on - the lower vents stop working and the defroster vent turns on
5. selecting lower vents only causes only the upper vents by the windows and lower vents to blow air
6. selecting lower vents and defrost vents causes all four upper vents and lower vents to blow air.
7. selecting just the defrost vents causes all four upper vents to blow and nothing else - the ac does turn but I guess it suppose to.

it does change from cold to hot, and when the circulation button is pressed the internal fan turns on.

before I bought the car there was a stereo system with subs and amps, installed by professional installers. Not sure if that may have anything to do with it, but the system works great so i don't know.

I plan to tear into my car monday or tuesday to fix a few other little things so any direction with this problem will be of help.

How hard is it to pull those controls out of the dash?

you may just need the new switch modules for the dials and buttons. usually fairly cheap on ebay.
