Cold starting problem

Hi All,

I have a 96 Civic Si (Canadian) which has a hard time starting when the engine is cold in the mornings.

When I start my car first thing in the morning, the engine fires up but within 1-2 seconds of starting, the RPMs drop and the engine stalls. I have been able to work around this so far by slightly holding down the pedal after I start the car to keep the engine at around 1,000 RPM... after holding it here for a few seconds, I can take my foot off the pedal and the engine will idle normally.

This problem only occurs when I first start my car every morning. Throughout the rest of the day, the car will start fine. Once the car has warmed up, I will not have this problem.

Re: Cold starting problem

Bump, I posted this last March. However, once the weather warmed-up this problem went away. Now, almost a year later, the weather has been getting very cold again and this problem is occuring again. Anyone know what could be causing these rough starts while cold? I have to hold the gas for about 10 seconds after cold starting so the engine won't stall.

Try checking your fuel delivery, pump, filter, pressure, and injectors. My car does roughly the same thing but on a low tank, just too lazy to figure it out.

Re: Cold starting problem

Well it's been 2 years since I made this post, but I have finally found out what was causing this problem!

I had a dirty IACV valve - I cleaned it using the instructions I found on another forum:

Problem solved! My Civic is idling perfectly now.
