1996 EX Engine Help
Hey guys, well i have had a 96 ex (manual) for awhile, and it has a blown engine. I was wondering what all engines could work as a replacement. I already know that the stock is a D16Y8, but they are hard to come by where im at, and there are zero on eBay. I have about $1000 saved up and was wondering what kind of engine i could throw in it and maybe where i could find one. So all help is greatly appreciated!!!
Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
If at all possible stick with that one. That is the best D-series engine there is (in my humble oppinion). The D16z8 should also fit without major trouble since they are very very similar (D16z8 being older version out of 5th generation civic, in that case use both manifolds from your engine since they are a little better and fit bolt on). Or you could rebild your engine
at least than you'll know what you have under the hood. There is no garantee that new engine will be mouch better than yours. And beware D16 engines are known to become oil thirsty with age.

I agree in sticking with the D16Y8. Keep your eyes peeled and maybe call some shops that install DOHC VTEC engines. They sometimes have a surplus of D series engines laying around. As far as going back to a 5G, it's still a TON of wiring to deal with (unless you buy a ready made harness, not cheap).
And I also agree that rebuilding is an option...how bad is it blown?
I don't however agree on the 'oil thirsty' bit though. I've had several friends (and I currently own one over 170,000) at over 200,000 miles without any oil burning. One was over 430,000 miles on the original engine with no oil burning (suspension bushings were all worn out though). But again, that depends on regular oil changes throughout it's life, and no NOS or turbo.

Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
Thanks for the info, guys. The block is destroyed! The previous owner ran it without oil until the rod blew out the side, if you look right behind the header there is about a fist sized hole, witht it sticking out. I was looking for a full motor, but they are close to impossible to find in my location. I dont know where to look!
Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
Whoa...that is blown!
Well, try this company: http://www.risingsunengines.com/
I dealt with them about 12 years ago when I did my engine swap. I'm sure there are tons more. Do you have any import shops near you? I know there was a big salvage yard within a few hours drive of you years ago...don't recall the name.

Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
Im pretty sure all they have is a D15, i know that the D15 is the japanese replacement but i dont know if i can just throw that motor in. I wish there was a import shop, i live in a crap town, haha. Do you know if that motor will be compatible?
Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
That all depends on which D15 it is. The US D15's were 5G and older...read: wiring mess. Start surfing around on the web to some relatively close import shops or salvage yards. Good luck!
Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
Get the engine that is designed for the vehicle. If you have to have it shipped then do so. It'll be worth it in the end. If you start doing Dr. Frankenstein's work then expect a lot of headaches, especially if you have never installed a engine before.

They may know where to get a D16 if they don't have some already.
On another note (this is what I did to my DX).
I bought my B20B from them for about $650 shipped. B20 is an easy swap and you just need to replace the vertical intake manifold with either a Del Sol, Si or Integra B18 one. I went way beyond that but the basic B20 swap is fairly affordable if you need to do one anyway.
Edit:
Keep in mind that swaps can be costly and time consuming and you should know that going into it, even if you are swapping in the same motor.

Re: 1996 EX Engine Help
CrazyD is right. You know if you save another 1+2K you will be able to get your hands on an old integra or si model, at least a decent down payment. I hate to have you young guys do all this heavy work when it's probably not worth your effort. However, you could call it a life experience and do the swap. If you are not an engine guy get one because it will be messy and you will have to deal with some unique issues.
