Low on power and dead spots????

Heres the deal, Ive got a BONE stock 2000 EX 2dr 5spd. Ive had it since 118k. Its got 143k on the odo now. It doesnt burn a lick of oil and has never let me down. Ive noticed latley that it has acouple dead spots in the power band and seems to be running kinda crappy. Also if i run the fuel tank down below the 1/4 mark sometimes it will turn over way too long before it will start, if its above 1/4tank it will fire right up every time. I recently changed the fuel filter and air filter. O and an O2 sensor a couple weeks ago. But other then these things and regular maintence/tune up/timing belt, i havent touched it. The most noticable dead spot is around the 2k-3k range but after you get around 4k+ its fine. Any ideas? TPS? Fuel pump? Any input is greatly appriciated!!!

Re: Low on power and dead spots????

The extra cranking below 1/4 tank is normal.

You didn't mention changing your spark plugs, so if you didn't do that be sure and get a new set of NGK's for it and install them. You also didn't mention distributor cap and rotor. Definitely go with Honda for those. Then again, if you replaced the 02 sensor with a non-Honda one and didn't get a good solid solder job done, you may have to redo that to eliminate any problems. How is your MPG?

Re: Low on power and dead spots????

Thanks scott, i was begining to wonder about this forum.

Spark plugs are napa brand along with distributor cap, rotor, O2 sensor, and plug wires. Ill check the solder job on the O2 sensor. My mpg is about 29-30 and i drive like grandpa most of the time but on occasion ill clean it out. lol This past summer it was getting about 33-36mpg. I figured the milage drop was typicle in the winter with warm up time etc but I still dont think its right.

Oh, yes I don't know where you live but winter MPG will definitely drop(those cold starts are brutal-and never let it 'warm up' by idling=just drive it easy unless below 0F then idel for up to 60 seconds).

I'd stay away seriously from anything but honda wires/dist cap and rotor and NGK plugs. The wires could easily hurt mpg too. I've had OEM wires in both mine and friends Honda's at over 200,000 miles with no detrimental loss (still within factory specs per factory Helms manual and an ohm meter). That is unless they have been physically damaged.

Your mileage isn't horrible for winter if it's well below freezing (but the missing thing is not right). My automagic daily driver ('98 LX) with 172,000 miles on the ticker had an average of 36.9MPG for the past 49,000 miles I owned it in AZ (yes with a/c 75% of the time). Then I moved back to the midwest and my mileage has been right around 33MPG this winter so far.

Wow, got long-winded, must get to bed!

Re: Low on power and dead spots????

Im in southern Ohio, right next to the river. Its been pretty warm lately my milage is about 32mpg for the current tank. The car doesnt actually miss per say but right around 2k rpm's when accelerating it just kinda floats doesnt gain rpm as fast as it does below or above 2k. Just kinda falls on its face for about 500rpm then takes back off again.

Thanks for your input!

Re: Low on power and dead spots????

Hmm, well the MPG is right in line with mine so you should be ok. Odd though. If it gets worse I'd worry about it but since there aren't really any symptoms I'd live with it . Maybe toss in a bottle of Techron for giggles.

Funny we live so close!
