Re: Gas Performance in Cold

i get 40mpg in the summer and 32 in the winter all highway miles. yeah its pretty normal. colder air means more fuel being used to get the correct a/f ratio and keep the ecu happy.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

try using super it burns slower therefore you get a more complete burn with that dense air in there. yea it costs a little more but i bet you go farther on the tank.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

That's interesting. I've never experienced a 20% reduction in gas mileage from cold weather in a Honda driving in CT. When's the last time you did a tune-up?

What about distributor cap? Rotor? Plug wires? My gas mileage went down too btw, but only to ~34 highway and I normally get 38 in warmer weather.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

Havn't touched those. Btw when the engine is cold it seems to be burning a lot of oil. Since it has been cold lately I normally give it some gas to about 3k when it first starts up and it just rolls white smoke out of the exaust or If I floor it before the engine is warm I can see a trail of white smoke down the road. Yet once the engine is warm it stops? It does this anytime the engine is not warm(even in the summer).

What do you mean when it first starts up? Like literally? The engine automatically takes you to 2000rpm through the IAC valve, and you shouldn't give it any more gas beyond that. It takes 1 minute to pump oil to the top of the engine, and after that if you want to warm up the car just drive it.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

when i cold start the 92 accord, in cold weather, alot of times the idle will rise and then suddenly fall and shut down unless you hold the gas pedal for a while. im guessing the iac is clogged again.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

I realize that but still even at 3k for a few seconds I don't get why its burning oil only when its cold. Or anytime I put it too the floor.

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

have you done a leakdown test? it could be worn valve guides but also the piston rings could be bad. compression test? are all cylinders making close to the same psi?

Re: Gas Performance in Cold

It will be a few days before I could take it to have a compression test, if it makes a difference until its warm it also sounds like its knocking like mad.
