99 hatch problems

I just bought a second car for my girlfriend, its a 99 civic hatch. It has the engine light code always on, the guy I bought it from told me it was 1456 or 1457, can't remember, but he did tell me it had something to do with evap, any ideas where i could start checking????
Also, it started to have trouble getting into or out of park, i took apart where the shifter is and checked everything in there, nothing seems to be in the way, so it has to be something further down the line, does this mean my transmission is about to go, should i worry????

any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Re: 99 hatch problems

To get the diagnostic trouble code you can take your car to Auto Zone or other auto parts chain in your area that does free ODB2 scans. Otherwise you can get the code yourself by jumping the SCS connector with a paperclip and count the long and short CEL flashes.

Re: 99 hatch problems

i know the code, it's either 1456 or 1457, the guy scaned it in front of me....it's something to do with evap.....at higher RPM, the is a whistle that is coming from the rear, I'm pretty sure that that is the leak, anybody have any idea where the evap system is and what it looks like?? there car takes longer to start when the gas tank gets closer to empty.

Re: 99 hatch problems

Dude, it would be helpful to know the exact DTC because they refer to different EVAP components and why troubleshoot something that's not a problem? Get another scan and this time write down the DTC and we can go from there.

P1456 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank Area)

P1457 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (EVAP Control Canister Area)
