Smile (Heimholtz) Resonator Box

Hey everyone, Newb to the site but not too the world of cars . I am in the process of freshening my D16Y7 on my 97 LX (Canadian EX, which is a ripoff). I was wondering if it is a good thing or bad thing to remove the resonator box on my intake, the big and bulky box at the beginning of the intake tract.

I was thinking about using it as a support but plugging the 2 holes in my intake pipe. Is it a beneficial thing to do on my civic? The reason i ask is because i did this with my 98 GMC Sierra and it actually made a difference, but not all vehicles are created equally. Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Re: (Heimholtz) Resonator Box

I don't think it will make a noticable gain. Even if you replaced the whole intake with a high-priced racing intake, you might gain 5hp once you passed 5000RPM. The resonator is just there to deaden the sound. If you take it off, your car will sound a little louder.

Re: (Heimholtz) Resonator Box

It made a difference in my 98 Sierra, because i had a misfiring problem and had no money to fix it. so i took it off the intake and capped the hole with a campbells soup can. It smoothed out my engine alittle because of the bad condition it was in. I don't think i would've noticed that much if it was running well.

I just figured i would do some mods while i was doing some motor work and it was off and out of the way. If it doesn't hurt my civic than i am goin for it. thanks for the help.
