97 Civic Maintnence Light

Hey the other day my green maintnence light turned yellow on me. I know I can take it to Autozone and other places for free but what do I need to go ahead and do on my own for them? The computer is behind the passenger side panels, do I need to go ahead and take that off for them, or Is there another way to check the codes? BTW...its the non-vtec 1.6L and my gas mileage right now is in the low 20's.

Your maintenance light is not the same as a Check Engine Light (CEL). The maintenance light turns yellow and then red after you have driven a certain number of miles just to remind you that it's time for maintenance. You can easily reset the yellow or red back to green by inserting your ignition key into the slot right below the light.

The only reason you'd need to have a scanner read your diagnostic code is if your CEL was on. Even then, there's a simple way to retrieve the diagnostic code using a paper clip.

That doesn't explain why you're getting bad mileage. eHow many miles are on your car and when was your last tune-up?

I'd say if you don't know when the car was last tuned up then it's time for one. You should be getting about 32mpg.

Re: 97 Civic Maintnence Light

Locate the SCS connector behind the passenger kick panel. Then jumper the 2 pins in the connector using a paper clip (or any other suitable metal conductor) instead of the special Honda tool. The turn on your ignition to position II and count the long and short blinks of the Check Engine Light to get the 2 digit Diagnotic Trouble Code.
