Single Click from starter for a few tries, then engine starts

I have a 2003 Honda Civic LX. Recently, when I turn the ignition switch in the morning, I get a single click. This happens a few times, then about the 5th try, it starts right up. Some mornings it starts up with no problems at all. Today, it took 16 tries before it started. Any ideas?

My starter was doing that sort of thing for a while last summer. Then my battery died. How old is yours?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Clunk, clunk, clunk, *sigh* crankcrankcrankcrank: That's usually an indication of bad contacts in the solenoid, which means replacing the starter for most people.

A few tests should confirm or deny this guess.

Or, a hammer test.

....sounds like an old Corolla of mine, Toyota were known for this symptom. Never got stranded though.

Mechanic friend popped out the brass/copper plunger and shined it up and worked like a charm.

Avoid reman junk.
