Rep Power: 0 First time changing timing belt and have a few questions
I'm going to be changing my timing belt, along with the water pump and other belts, and have a few questions. I've spent many hours the last two days reading the timing belt guides on here (and watching youtube videos ), but I am unsure of a few things.
Do I need to buy OEM parts, or can I buy them at Advance Auto Parts?
I found the following at AAP:
$43.99 - GMB New Water Pump
$72.99 - Dayco Timing Belt Kit (timing belt and tensioner)
2x $17.39 - Dayco Poly Rib Poly-Rib Belt (came up when I searched for power steering belt and alternator belt, I don't know if this is the correct part or not!)
Also, some of the guides recommend replacing the "oil seals." Are oil seals the same thing as the crankshaft and camshaft seals? (i.e. the rubber rings that go behind the pulleys?)
Thanks for your advice!

I always buy OEM, most of the time. The oil seals are what you said, the cam and crankshaft seals.
OEM parts are slightly priced more:
91213-P2F-A01 OIL SEAL (29X45X8) $3.06
38920-PLR-003 BELT, COMPRESSOR $12.24
91212-PLM-A01 OIL SEAL (38X50X7) $3.72
19200-PLM-A01 WATER PUMP $57.95
56992-PLM-003 BELT, POWER STEERING PUMP $11.12
14400-PMM-A02 BELT, TIMING (104RU22 GB-333) $16.24
14520-PLC-335 TENSIONER SET, TIMING BELT $82.09
and don't forget the Crank Pulley Tool.

Thanks for both of your replies.
If it's OK to buy from Advanced Auto Parts I would prefer that, since the parts are cheaper, and also because they're offering a really good deal right now ($30 off, plus $50 off a future order).
I'm unsure of the AAP parts to use for the seals and belts (aside from the timing belt, that is).
Are the camshaft and crankshaft seals the same, exactly? Should I just use two of these:
$10.69 - Beck/Arnley Oil Seal
Or should I get these:
$18.69 - Beck/Arnley Rear Crankshaft Seal
$5.39 - Beck/Arnley Camshaft Seal
Isn't it odd that the seals at AAP are more expensive than the OEM ones? Are there cheaper ones at AAP that I'm missing?
As for the alternator and power steering belts, when I do a search on AAP this comes up
$17.39 - Dayco Poly Rib Poly-Rib Belt
Are the alternator and power steering belts exactly the same?
Thanks for your advice, everyone!

You know, with the price of the seals and alternator and P/S belts the cost of buying the stuff at Advance Auto Parts is just as much as buying the OEM parts. So maybe it would just be best to get the OEM parts?
I've been looking for the OEM parts online and it seems like it's a bit cheaper if the parts are all bought together. Would a kit like this:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...+Kit+%281.7%29
Be alright to use?

Is it necessary to replace the crankshaft and camshaft seals, assuming I don't see any oil around them?
I ask because if it isn't, and if it's not important to change the alternator and power steering belts (I can't figure out which seals and belts to get from AAP), then I could just get the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump, which would allow me to get this done tomorrow (I don't want to drive my car until I get the timing belt changed).
What do you think?

Re: First time changing timing belt and have a few questions
If the crank/cam seals are not leaking then I wouldn't worry about it unless your car has 200k+ on it.
It's not necessary to replace the PS/ALT belts but most people do while they have everything apart. It's not hard to replace them after the fact so no big deal.
I got the same parts from advance auto you linked in your first post and have had no issues with them.

Thanks for your reply!
I went ahead and bought the following:
GMBNew Water Pump
DaycoTiming Belt
DaycoTiming Component Kit
FelproCrankshaft Front Seal Set (the guy at AAP said this should work, but I don't know what the gasket or o-rings are for?)
FelproCamshaft Front Seal Set (again, he said this should fit, but who knows..)
PermatexWater Pump And Thermostat RTV Silicone Gasket (one of the guides mentioned putting this on the water pump gasket. Should it go anywhere else?)
Did I miss anything?
I'm hoping to do this tomorrow, so thanks for your advice everyone!

Re: First time changing timing belt and have a few questions
I'm hoping to replace my timing belt soon too.
I was actually looking to try the Timing Belt Kit from Amazon.

OK, it took me till now to get all of the parts I needed, but now I'm ready to go and will be doing this tomorrow afternoon.
One thing I'm not sure on, though: is it OK to not replace the crank and cam pulleys?

Just thought I'd post an update..
I started this project Saturday morning and finished late Sunday afternoon It took me a long time as I've never done something like this before, and also because I ran into a few problems that slowed me down -- notably a bent radiator and me breaking a water pump bolt..
I replaced the following:
I think I may have pushed the oil seals in a little too far, I'm not sure if I tensioned the alternator and P/S belts correctly (I basically just guessed), and I noticed that the top timing cover did not have a seal like the bottom (I'm pretty sure it was that way when I took it off), but other than that putting everything back together went fairly smoothly
