Rep Power: 0 Timing belt change at 120,000km?
Hey im looking to buy a 7th gen civic, it has just over 123km on it, the owner i noticed didnt get the timing belt changed til 120km. I could be wrong but doesnt the time belt have to be changed every 100km at the latest? some say doing it at 90,000km is prefered. well if anwayz 100km is when it was suppose to be done and this car had it at 120km, do you think any damage would be done to the engine? 20km over is a lot!

honda recommends getting it done every 90,000 miles but people have gone way past that with no problems but your taking a chance doing so. if the car runs fine and a new belt was installed then no there is no reason not to buy it.

i've always heard that for our gen 120,000 is recommended, but you could push it.. but as it was already said, its a risk you have to be willing to take.
i wouldn't worry about it tooo too much.

Wont it do damage though? I heard that something would explode inside the car if the belt is long overdue.

Well your engine will not be "in time" which leads to your valves being in the combustion chamber while the piston is all the way...up. That's what you call a valve job.

Oh i see, looks like this one was changed in 7 years as the owner hasntt even put 100,000 km on it in that time span. So hope no damage done to my engine or valves.
I read my manual and it said to change the belt every 100,000 km not miles. 100,000 km is like 65,000 miles.

the recommended service interval is 176,000km or 7 years, whichever comes first in normal or severe conditions. If your cheap then have your mechanic inspect the belt and let him telll you when you to change it, but if the belt breaks or slips your engine will implode and die.
