2003 ex Transmission question

My transmission shifts just fine but going down the highway in 4th and 5th when you get on the gas or off the shifter handle moves a lot. It is normal in all the other gears. Transmission fluid has been changed and has all new transmission and engine mounts. Car has 279,000 miles with new JDM engine. If you have any ideas they would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

My best guess: Could be shift link bushings are worn and/or shifter mounting bolts are loose. Inside the car: Pull the shifter boot and associated console piece(s) to get a better look at bolts and rubber bushings.
Underneath the car inspect all shift link bushing.

This may be related: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...n-dilemma.html

The car in the video below is a Mazda but your Civic should have similar shifter mounting bolts as shown in the video starting at the 14:08 time mark. I think (but not 100% sure) that those mounting bolts also have bushing that wear out. The shifter bushings under the car the he is replacing are most likely similar to Honda's.

Re: 2003 ex Transmission question

Does your trans make whine or howl noises in certain gears?

No noise at all. Just the movement. Doesn't grind going into gears everything is really smooth.

Abnormaly split in two (widened gap) or normal narrow gap (parting line) as shown in pic in the previously linked thread?
Upload video to Youtube then link your Youtube video here.

Re: 2003 ex Transmission question

The shaking is only in 4th or fifth gear getting on or off the gas.

That is odd. Does is shift well into each gear?
Ever slip out of gear (worn synchros)?

Did you check the four bolts/nuts for tightness that mount the gear shifter? If you did and those are tight then my guess is there is movement from the front suspension or steering that is transferring to shifter. However, if that's the case it seems like the shifter would shake in all gears?

Re: 2003 ex Transmission question

It shifts great in all gears, never a crunch, has never popped out of gear. I have the console out and am going to leave it out for a while. My son in law was sending the car to the junk yard. He had just put in a JDM engine, new exhaust and intake system. I told him to give it to me and I would fix it and give it to a nephew that needs help. So I really don't a problem with the transmission down the road. Will see if anything else moves with the console out.

Re: 2003 ex Transmission question

I'd suspect one of the trans shift levers is moving as you get on and off the gas.. If that turns out to be true then expect an internal trans issue, but if it is not noisy and it drives and shifts ok right now IDK if it's worth digging deeper until it does something drastic.

I would wonder if it's got a failing bearing that's allowing unwanted movement.
Are you familiar with what one of these trans sounds like with a bad bearing vs. all good bearings?

Re: 2003 ex Transmission question

I can pick out the noise of a bad bearing. I was thinking thrust washers/ bearings. But will drive for a while with the console out while I'm waiting for the fog lights. Worse case will get a JDM transmission.
