Transmission Fluid
Hello, I own a 04 automatic Civic EX with 171k miles, and I need to do a transmission fluid change. My main issue is what fluid should I get? I have seen many conflicting views on whats safe to use and what is not. Another question I have, is should I flush my transmission at a shop? I was quoted $200+ to have a flush and fill done. Any help is appreciated.

On draining it you will probably get out around 3 Quarts "Just make sure You
refill it back up with what You got out" some drain pans You buy in stores have
already the measurement markings on the outside be wise to use one of these
kind. after word refill it with Honda Automatic trans fluid start it let it idle a few
minutes then with Your foot on the brake slowly shift it it from Park to reverse
to Neutral pausing in between shifting 2-3 seconds is enough to fill the cavitys
in the trany with oil check the fluid Level drive it for 10 minutes and repeat this process
over 3 maybe 4 times and Your Done. No need for flushing I have done it this way for the
Longest time I can think of other shops wont do it this way because it takes up too much of there time & Labour.
I will Post the Video up on it when I find it.

Hondas official "flush" procedure equates to multiple drain-and-fills.
A regular trans fluid service is a single drain-and-fill.
About 2.5-2.75 quarts for one D&F, depending on how long you let it drain out
FLUID LEVEL CHECK is done with the ENGINE OFF (See your owners manual)
Make damn sure you have a funnel that will reach the dipstick hole before you drain out the fluid!!!

My friendly neighborhood mechanic is doing it for $12. It's BYOAFT so I picked up 3 qts of DW1 at the dealer last week.
In fairness he's doing other things too but he quoted me this seperately...

Cheapest ive found that i can have the safety of knowing there using the correct fluid. I can only afford to do it twice this time, going in for my second tomorrow.

Not always the case. I've over-paid countless times to have work done at a dealership only to have it done wrong or needing rework. If you know what you are doing, you can find highly skilled and competent mechanics that do good work for reasonable prices.
