2002 Non-Vtec Motor Swap Question (EGR Valve Motor to Non EGR Valve Motor)
2002 Non-Vtec Motor Swap Question (EGR Valve Motor to Non EGR Valve Motor)
Hey Guys, So I just bought a 2002 Honda Civic Lx coupe with a bad motor off craigslist for a little bit of nothing over the weekend, according to previous owner the motor in the car is the 1.7 non vtec with egr valve.... My question is would I be able to drop a 1.7 non-vtec motor that came out of a 02 Honda civic that DOES NOT have the egr valve into my car without any problems???
I only ask because LKQ has a bunch of non-vtec 1.7's without the egr valve on there website and they are $100 to $200 cheaper and have less miles than the 1.7's with the egr valve listed on there website. So of course i would rather buy the cheaper engine with less miles but dont want to buy it if the missing egr valve on the replacement engine is going to cause problems since my civics engine technically has the egr valve
Any input is greatly appreciated

To keep your computer happy you will need to keep/reuse/swap over all EGR related parts: Valve, the water housing the EGR valve sits on, and the intake manifold gasket which has several more holes than the gasket from the non-egr engine.

Thanks for the reply, and I was afraid of that answer, and if there a way to tell for sure if it has egr with out pulling the motor out? Just wanna be sure before I order anything because the previous owner isn't entirely sure if it has egr or not....

Your present engine is equipped with an EGR valve, yes? You know what it looks like and where it is located, yes?
Look for the same on the next engine. It's either there, or it's not.
It really wouldn't matter anyway, the engine you have now has all the parts necessary if you need to swap them. It's easy to swap this stuff while both engines are on the ground.
You might want some fresh gaskets, but I've done this with high tack on the old gaskets too. The gaskets involved aren't paper and can usually be reused with a little help unless they got damaged.
Swapping the stuff over for EGR is no big deal. Any engine replacement job you should plan for swapping parts from old engine to new anyway, because sometimes it's necessary. All you really bought is a block and head.....everything that came attached to it is just extras.

Open the hood and stare at it.

After doing some searching on the forum, ive gathered that the EGR valve is on the left side of the engine, I have attached some pics of the motor in my civic, can someone confirm if the egr valve is present or not.... Sorry for the noob questions just want to make sure I buy the correct engine from LKQ

Ok cool, thanks!... Im going to assume the previous owner just didnt know what he was talking about, he told me that he thought the egr valve was on the backside of the motor......
Re: 2002 Non-Vtec Motor Swap Question (EGR Valve Motor to Non EGR Valve Motor)
The solution to this problem of having a non EGR engine in a 04-05 Civic is to change the water outlet on the end of the head to one with EGR, and also change the intake manifold gasket. You must also change the intake manifold gasket to a 04-05 because it must have holes for the EGR, and the 01-03 doesn’t. The engine light will come on if you don’t. Hope this helps.
