Strangely , it opens the trunk but that's for another time. I went to Walmart to copy it and it would not fit in any of their slots. Are valet keys not copy able? What are my options for getting a second key made? I am not even sure our keys have chips?

Re: Just got an 02 and it only came with grey valet key

Ordinary key (double cut), or sidewinder key (router/laser cut)?

Although the original gray key was a valet and black keys were masters, the valet/master is determined by the cut pattern, not key color.

I think the dealers gray keys were sometimes cheaper so it may have easily been used a as a regular replacement key.

If it opened the trunk lid (and glovebox and floor/trunk release lockout) then it should be a master, pattern wise.
The valet cut should only open the doors and work the ignition.

IDK anything about walmarts key services, ask your questions at that store?
I walked by one key machine that looked like a soda machine and it was full of what looked to me like house keys, I did not notice car keys.

If it is an 02 your local Honda dealer may be able to make a 'clone' of your key, probably a little cheaper than making a regular one and programming it to the car.

Strange. It does not fit into the trunk lockout, or backseat flip down lock, but it does open the trunk! Here is a picture of the key:

If this is the valet key, what are my options in terms of copying it, and costs/options to get a new master key made?

Ok that's a normal double cut key (not sidewinder) and it sounds like a valet cut, but you may have stuck tumblers in the trunk lock. They do sometimes get stuck from lack of use and corrosion, because almost nobody uses their key in the trunk lid. Suggest squirt some penetrating oil into the lock cylinder?

You'll have to call around....prices can vary widely.

First, your master key will probably need to be cut by code (obtained by submitting the cars VIN to get the key codes from Honda), you can't just have them cut a duplicate of your valet key.
(you might need to explain why not to some people LOL)

At a dealer, talk to the parts department first (hopefully someone who has been there for years and years who can remember this older stuff), ask about getting a master key cut by code (using the cars VIN) using a "ILCO T-5" blank, and cloning it on their ILCO key code duplicator.
If you get the deer in the headlights look from a kid, have them look up bulletin 99-053, it tells all about the T-5 keys and the ILCO code duplicator.

..Price for a T-5 key? I have no clue. You'll have to ask your dealership people. I'm sure price varies widely depending on the dealers.

Call local locksmith, ask if they can do the same job as above. If you live in a big city maybe your locksmith has invested in the equipment to do stuff like this.
If they can't clone yours using a T-5 key, ask if they can cut and program a key by code for your car.
In my small burg the locksmith only does this for the Big3 cars.

IF nobody will admit to having the T-5 and ILCO, then you are stuck with getting a Honda key and having it programmed, I"m sure for a lot more money than the first way.
Black head key blank, a little over 55 retail. (gray key is the same price on this one)
Plus any fee they wish to charge for cutting it. At my dealer they charge 10 to cut a key.

Plus a fee for service department to program it to your car, and they must have the car to go this route. My dealer charges an hour labor fee to program, one key or a dozen keys for that flat fee.

Again, call your local locksmith(s) and ask if they can do the same job (cutting AND cloning, or cutting AND programming), ask how much they charge.

Bulletin 99-053 PDF link, just in case you need reference (prices shown in link can't be valid, that version is over 15 years old....newer version of the bulletin is dated 2003 but I did not find one handy in a google search): https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...32479545,d.cWw
