Oil leak - engine/transmission area

Oil leak - engine/transmission area
So ive got a pretty significant oil leak, but cannot tell where it is coming from. its dripping down onto the transmission and the top of the starter is soaking with oil, as well as under the thermostat housing, but i cannot tell where it is coming from. I am pretty sure its engine oil (black) rather than the tranny fluid (its a stick). The valve cover gasket is dry and not leaking. Whats the cause?
