Reliable Turbo Build?

I comptemplated spending a **** ton to build a 200whp NA D17. But, figured I can have a very reliable turbo set up for less than NA.

I'm figuring about $2.5k for all the parts. Am I on crack, or is this a fair assumption of the cost for the parts?

I haven't put together a parts list. If/once I make one, I'll post it.

In the past I made a list for all the parts for a 700whp d16y8 build, it came in at about $8k.

Yeah, no problem. I think there's a few more threads with some n/a and turbo building, dunno where they're at now. From what I've seen most people go turbo.

Re: Reliable Turbo Build?

I did my shopping because I'm really cheap.

I bought a complete TSI KIT 4500 Miles for $500
AEM FIC $200
ARP HEADSTUDS $105
Tuning +/- $600
Replaced Misc Parts/Gaskets $100
Total: $1505

Plus I got a complete D17a2 w/ Auto Trans 69k Miles $425
Yes only $425. with VIN# to prove and title.
I confess that I took advantage of the guy who is desperate for money. He was really desperate to sell. It was worth 4 hours of driving.
I checked and tested the engine to make sure I didn't get f**d.

So Total with newer engine is $1930.
I haven't installed the turbo yet though. =(

Re: Reliable Turbo Build?

I would say closer to 3k- 3.5k brand new. I was also researching turbo setups for the future and found that you really should use the k-pro for engine management. That's $1100 dollars but it's priceless when it comes to reliability, drivability and tuning. After researching it was basically the only option if want a reliable turbo build. Yes there are guys that used AEM and the TSI black box but I wouldn't take a chance. If you shop around you could go cheaper but not on the k-pro.

Definitely planning on a k-pro. For 2 reasons: it's the best and the shop I'm gonna hve tune it only works with Hondata ECUs.

Re: Reliable Turbo Build?

I have the TSI turbo kit with aem fic and let me tell you first hand that the aem fic sucks! Its better then the black box....but it still sucks. These guys are 100% right when they say to go kpro, its definitely worth it and that is now what i'm saving up for to get a good tune with this turbo setup.

How long have you had your TSI kit on? I am planning on going turbo and TSI seems to be a good company, just a little pain to install. Has it been reliable? How much boost you running?
