Transmission upgrade options?
Transmission upgrade options?
Hey all, I'm now the proud owner of a Black 2005 Civic Hatchback Si with a 5 speed manual and 2.0.
Car runs great, my issue is gas mileage improvement, im getting 27 hwy. I think i can make it better with out changing my driving habits. I drive interstate speeds at about 80 and if i can lower the RPM's i can help it, so my question is....
Is there a manual shift 6 speed swap i can do on this car?
If so,
Is it direct bolt in?
Thanks

. Well, you can always upgrade to the newer 6spd trans from I guess the RSX or the Si. I personally have no experience with that stuff and I don't know whether or not they're just straight bolt ons though.
Re: Transmission upgrade options?
Drop the speed and cruise at 60 or 65 mph and you'll see MAJOR improvements. Going 80 mph you don't save much time at. Besides going 60 in a nice car is much more relaxing than going 80 blowing by traffic.

Good answer, thats what i was looking for and it gives me a start, now i just gotta research and see if its been done.....

Re: Transmission upgrade options?
unfortunatly, theres nothing you can really do in order to help your mpg.
ur car wasnt really designed for gas economy in the first place and changing out ur final gear is possible, but it'll cost you $$$$ (yes thats a 4 figure dollar sign)
ur better off investing that money in the gallons of gas.

from what ive read in the past if you do a 6 speed swap apparently you need the k-pro not 100% sure y i think it may have to do with sensors but that kinda killed it for me its been done just whats the point after needing to spend 1k on the ecu just to run it.

Re: Transmission upgrade options?
lets face it, there are some places where u cannot drive 65 and get away with it.
people will be honking at you, and cops will tell u to GTFO of the fast lane...

Re: Transmission upgrade options?
Why would you get hit from behind driving below 80..
Do the people behind get mad if your not speeding enough, so they push your car with their bumper until you go faster.

Re: Transmission upgrade options?
I honestly don't see the point in driving past 70mph. Cost wise, you've been given the best choice, OP. Just take it easier on the loud pedal. Steady acceleration, don't slam on your brakes, proper tire pressure, and only go about 65. Just with those alone you'll see improvements. You're already going well over the speed limit. What if you get pulled over? You're now late and all that speeding was for nothing.
Re: Transmission upgrade options?
To answer your question, yes it is a straight swap. The only thing you will lose is the reverse lockout function. (i.e. you could accidentally go from 5th to reverse instead of 5th to 6th.).
The only mod required is you have to put a little notch in your OEM shifter assembly to make room for it to shift into 6th and reverse. If you buy the buddy club short shifter for the EP3 then it's a straight bolt-in affair.
No, you don't need a K-pro, no you don't need anything else. The EP3 axles work, the EP3 Mounts work.
Also, the FINAL DRIVE of the 5 speed and 6 speed are the same, so you won't gain anything as far as MPG goes. You will, however, have better gear ratios for 1-5th, so your shifts don't cause the RPM to go really low. Makes it much easier in traffic.

Over here it's nice... 100km/h on any highway and you'll be passing people calmly. Good mpg's ftw

Re: Transmission upgrade options?
they should go back to 55mph speed limit. when you figure the time you save doing 80 instead, its not worth the money just to save 5-10 mins. gas prices will go way down due to less demand, and cops can enforce speeders and make money for the city.
Re: Transmission upgrade options?
...or you can let the speed be "reasonable and prudent" and let the people and the free market determine the demand. Works on the autobahn as long as you keep the slow people out of the left lane.
