Civic died last night
I was driving last night on the way home and noticed that my car was no longer started. (I was listening to music so I didn't even notice until I started slowing down). Now when I try to start it the engine just keeps turning over and over. Its not even attempting to fire or anything its weird. Checked all my fluids they are good, don't see any leaks. I thought I broke the timing belt but the valves are still moving when I try to start it. My first guess was a blow head gasket because they way it turns over and over makes it appear like its not getting compression, but then again I feel if it was the gasket it would still be trying to fire and its not even sputtering once. Any ideas guys? Could it be electrical possibly?

Thats what I'm thinking, but like I didn't hear anything unusual at all it just died. I also thought if it was a gasket I would still get some compression out of at least one of the cylinders(Im not so sure that gauge my dad used worked). I also talked to a friend who said to check the PGM Main relay.

Re: Civic died last night
you used a compression tester to check and it didnt record any pressure? did you get a good reading by unplugging the injectors and flooring the gas pedal when cranking the motor?

Re: Civic died last night
No gearbox I didn't. I'll try that tomorrow thanks. Do you know where the PGM-Fi relay is, I glanced up on the drivers side fuse area but I didn't see it. It kind of explains the symptoms(Minus the fact of no pressure but like you said I might now have got a good reading). I feel if I blew a gasket though I would still be getting some fire though and its not even attempting too.

Btw I hear the fuel pump kicking on...but does that mean its actually working? How can I check? Is there a port on the fuel rail anywhere I can use to see if it pumping or not?

usually if a pump isnt working to its max pressure, you can still start the car, it just wont have alot of power.

Re: Civic died last night
i know it sounds stupid, but is ur fuel tank full? sometimes that fuel guage needle is wrong.
if its turning and u hear the fuel pump prime, than ur not getting any fuel....and if ur car suddenly dies on u, its cuz it has no gas. check that and report in.
go get some gas and put it in for the heck of it. its one variable that you can eliminate

Re: Civic died last night
Pulled some stuff off yesterday, somehow the timing belt has managed to slip about 2 teeth....Iono how thats possible but it did. Haven't pulled the head off to check for bent valves, anyone had experience with this and could shed some light on if my valves are prob. bent or not.
Re: Civic died last night
Try to find the cause why the belt slipped. Old belt with broken ribbed teeth or tensioner not working / out of travel or something else like the tensioner seized up.
I am not sure if you bent the valves though!... I installed a belt on a crv once with two ticks (teeth) off.. it did not run well but never stalled, just lack of power. Once i realized the mistake and fixed it, it ran well. Running till date and the fuel efficiency is the same... so I just figured that the valves were not bent. (this one broke the timing belt going down the road - reason for new belt).
The only thing that I can not understand is why your car totally stalled while the crv one did run with timing off. I know the engines are different, we use coil packs it has a distributor cap. I would expect it at-least to run like ****..

Re: Civic died last night
Not sure, the timing belt and everything were done about 40k miles ago. It did seem like there was a little oil leaking around the crankshaft so maybe some oil got on the belt or the tensioner just needs to be replaced.

Head and everything was fine, just had to get new valves and belts and all. Still doesn't mean it didn't run my bank account dry but it could have been worse I suppose.

Re: Civic died last night
He was suppose to be putting it back together today and I would get it tomorrow(its been down for 2 weeks now). But as of like noon today the head gasket still hadn't arrived so I'm not sure if it ended up coming in or not which is annoying meaning he wont even get it going till late Monday night assuming everything goes smoothly.
