Gauge Questions on 01 Civic Auto

I recently purchased some EL gauges. I have the cluster off and in my home, the plastic covering off, and the black bezel off as well. My problem is trying to get the original faces off. I have searched around, and found this topic, but it doesn't have pictures. This is the part where I am:

Ok, remove the needles, they're on there pretty tight but do so as gently as possible so as not to mess up the stop points of the different gauges (if you do its Ok, since you can just reset them, I'll explain later). I removed them by placing as much of my fingers under them as possible and pulling up in a sort of upward squeezing motion, basically pulling up while trying to move my fingers toward the middle. With the needles off, take out the black rings using a flat tipped screwdriver and prying them upwards. Now you can take your gauge faces off.
I have tried, but I fear breaking the needles. And I have fat fingers, so how in the hell did he "place as much of his fingers under them as possible"? Thanks for any help in advance.

The guages I purchased are here, just for reference. I believe they are just simple overlays.

WTF?? I just realized I posted this in 6th gen, not 7th. SOB. If anyone can move it, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Gauge Questions on 01 Civic Auto

Try using a small flathead screwdriver wrapped in a towel/paper towel to pop it off
