500 mile round-trip on 85k engine tips?
500 mile round-trip on 85k engine tips?
I'll soon be leaving FL to NC and coming back, I need tips from the pros on what should be inspected/replaced before hitting the highway.
-New NGK spark plugs in September
-Changed synthetic oil in September - less than 1.5k miles driven
-New tires
I was reading something about LC20 & FP60, should I go ahead and get this? what else do you recommend? thanks!

A complete mechanical inspection is a good idea, you should be able to check everything yourself without much trouble.
Check the trans fluid, coolant, brake fluid, PS fluid to make sure they are all at the right levels and looking clean. If you haven't changed your air filter recently that might be worthwhile as well.

Just check your fluids and such like bomber mentioned. You know your car better than anyone else, has it been making any strange sounds, running rough, or anything out of the ordinary? If so, get it checked out. If it's running good just sit n' go. I do about 100 miles a day on my civic and it has 100k miles on it now, I don't even worry about breaking down.

Yes. Don't forget your tire pressure. As Kenny said, often overlooked. Everyone has given you good info to be prepared. My last car had 150k on it and went from NY to North Carolina with just a new valve cover gasket, plugs, wires, and an oil change with no issues, so you should be good to go.

Coolant lasts a lot longer than one year. It's a pretty bad waste to change coolant every year, especially since it's so bad for the environment.

+1 changing you coolant annually would be like changing your oil after 1000km.
To everyone who mentioned checking tire pressure, good idea, but it should be done every two weeks during the winter anyway.

I check my tires constantly because I was on a road trip when the guy in front of me blew out his tire, spun out and went into the ditch in the middle of the freeway, luckily no one got hurt, and he didnt hit anything
I learned:
1. Check tires
2. Dont Tailgate

And just when i got 90k miles and i went in a 1200k miles trip from TN to QC...
Re: 500 mile round-trip on 85k engine tips?
thanks everybody for such great tips!
i fill up my tires with nitrogen so I can skip regular check
intervals, also they are brand new.
i will be getting an oil change before i leave, other than that all fluid levels are fine.

How do you like the nitrogen fillups? I had it once and didn't like it personally. They told me never to fill it with regular air. I didn't like the idea of having to pay for a tire fillup. I don't have easy access to nitrogen at home

Nitrogen is absolutely useless on a passenger car tire.
Also, you still need to do regular checks as temperature effects the volume independent of particle size.
