Red face P0401 Code

So.....i just bought a 2005 LX Special Edition automatic 1.7L

The day after i purchased it the damn engine light came on, my friend had a code reader thing and it came up as a P0401.....??

I think that means that i need a EGR valve and gasket??

Is that correct? Could it be anything else or different?

Please help : )

Re: P0401 Code

P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected

that means the EGR valve is clogged. you can take it off and try to spray carb cleaner inside, it might work. if not, you need a new one. they are easy to change, just remove the two nuts. prolly can reuse the old gasket too so long as its not falling apart. the EGR valve is the piece with the bluish sticker on it and grey connector.

Re: P0401 Code

To GEARBOX>> I'm missing my EGR system on my 96 EX altogether. I cant find any left in a junk yard and haven't seen one come into work yet. Running out of time on emissions... Got any pic for earlier models? I'm feelin' way screwed right now and would love the help.

Re: P0401 Code

well just the valves are around $150 new from what ive seen, do you even have a place for it on the engine? i think only the 96-00 HX civics had egr systems. i found this one for cheap... but i think your car didnt come with it.

Re: P0401 Code

it could be yes. the egr also cools the exhaust gas, but its main function is reducing harmful emissions. if its clogged tho, and the engine light is on, the car will never be getting its best gas mileage.

Re: P0401 Code

hmm it could be the engine passages that are clogged then, but im not sure what you can do about it. maybe spray carb cleaner into those two holes in the engine block. let it sit for a while and spray more. wait at least an hour before putting the egr back on and starting the car for the solvents to evaporate.

Re: P0401 Code

Hi Christalee3,

I have the same problem. The light came back after 40 miles. Did you fix the problem? If yes, could you, please, tell me the details?

Thanks a lot!

Re: P0401 Code

If it's still not working maybe you have a short in a wire or a loose connection.

Re: P0401 Code

Try resetting the ECM/PCM: With the ignition off, pull #6 fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds.

Re: P0401 Code

I'm at loss now. The service manual says to replace the EGR and nothing else. Try looking for loose connector or broken wire.
