remove clearcoat from taillights

i just finished blacking out my taillights with 2 coats of the niteshades spray and 1 clearcoat. i realized i could really use another coat so it matches the car more. you can still see some of the red reflectors when the car isnt on. since my car is also black its more noticible that the taillights aren't as black as they should be.

problem is i already put the clearcoat on so does anyone know how i can remove the clearcoat only? or can i just spray another coat of niteshades on top of the clear? i don't want to remove all of the paint and start over just for one more coat.

Re: remove clearcoat from taillights

you can gently use rubbing compound on it until you start to see black coming off. then stop cause the clear is gone. use a polish like scratch-x to make the tint shiny again, then spray on extra coats, polish again when dry, then clearcoat. that will ensure they keep the shiny finish.

Re: remove clearcoat from taillights

well actually nail polish remover is diluted acetone. and acetone is generally very harsh on plastics. it can completely haze or even melt them permanently. but glad nothing happened to you. some type of alcohol is milder like isopropyl.

Re: remove clearcoat from taillights

lime green you may want to use plast-x on those lights just in case the acetone stripped some stuff away, cause the sun will beat on them and they might fade or become brittle.
