Exhaust Help
Exhaust Help
I have a 04 Em2 and everything is stock except i have a HKS High Power Muffler welded on, and its super quiet. I want my car to be louder, i looked in to custom cat back piping but i'm not sure if that's what i need.. any help?
Re: Exhaust Help
yes you need a sri, they are loud, especially when you pin the gas down.
also just get a full catback system, they fit in place of your stock system and are not really that hard to put on.

Re: Exhaust Help
no a sri will not make your exhaust louder and deeper, it will not change anything to do with your exhaust sound. it makes your car louder and deeper (the front of it). the sound on a vehicle comes from two places. the exhaust, and the engine.
as for getting the catback, you currently have a stock system with a muffler on the end. having a muffler looks nice but it doesnt do anything.
your muffler isnt changing much because you still have the same amount of exhaust running through your stock 1 3/4" piping.
you need to get a full catback system. it will give you a bit better performance, but your sound will be nice and deep. basically by getting a catback system, youre providing a bigger set of piping before the muffler for more air to flow through towards the muffler. it isnt such a 'bottleneck system' anymore.

Re: Exhaust Help
you will have to buy a catback system if you want to do this. they range anywhere between 100 for a no name brand system, and 700 for the named brand. most catback systems are very easy to install (even on your own you can do it with a jack and stands in about an hour) or most shops will do it for 100$ or less because its only about 20 minutes of work if the car is up on a hoist.
most catback systems for our car come with piping that is 2", 2 1/4" and 2 1/2". all you have to do us undo 3 bolts that hold your stock exhaust system to the cat converter. once youve undone those 3 bolts you just bolt the new system in. its brainless.
i remember when i first got my exhaust system (Tsudo N1 system) it was about $300 and everybody was saying stay away from ebay. i bought it from an ebay authorized dealer and i got it shipped to my door for only about $430. its been 3 years and it works just as good and sounds just as deep and clean as the day i bought it. the funniest part is that you can get them for 150$ instead of 300 now. its a killer system, i always get compliments on how good the sound is.

Re: Exhaust Help
we posted at the same time. just read what i just posted. like i was saying if i was really out to make my car a super powerful beast, or a showcar, i might consider going with a GReddy system or an RSR system, but you get no hp difference really between any of them. might as well get whatever you know will sound the best combined with the easiest on the wallet. i think you can get the same one i have now for 150(current price) +100 shipping if you live in the states. i had to pay 300(old price) + 150 shipping because i live in canada.
Re: Exhaust Help
yep buy a catback system, you wont regret it after comparing it to your current setup.
as for your current hks muffler, since its welded onto your stock exhaust system, i wouldnt sell it. i would leave it as it is. you know its quiet and reliable and a good backup if you ever have something go wrong. i have my full stock exhaust system still sitting in the rafters of my garage incase i ever need it. not to mention you can get hks mufflers for about $50 brand new, so its not worth cutting off and selling it used and alone. you might get 20$ for it at best. just keep it on the stock system as a backup.

Re: Exhaust Help
no, its easier just to follow this link. from helping other people i know that there are really only two sellers that sell the real tsudo ones for ex models (other sellers have similar systems but theyre literally knockoffs of knockoffs). if you add up system+shipping of each of the two guys, it comes out to pretty much the same thing, so i would just use this guy since its the same seller i bought the same system from 3 years ago and havent had a problem yet.

Re: Exhaust Help
also just look at the picture of the installed system on that car and compare that to the stock system you have now with your muffler installed. i bet everything makes sense now.
err. hold on. you said 04 em2. is your car a 2dr or 4dr? and is it a dx lx or ex? it matters.
if you have an 04 ex 2dr/4dr model, go here:

if you have an 04 dx/lx 2dr/4dr model, go here:

Re: Exhaust Help
the first link i gave you is to the exact same one i have (01-05 ex model), and from the exact same seller i bought it from. the only difference is when i bought mine it was 300 + 130 for shipping and theyre now 140 + shipping so you save some money.
the only problem i had was because of the lip kit on my car. when i installed the system, my rear bumper lip sits a bit low so it was kind of touching the top of the muffler end, but thats not really an exhaust system problem, thats more because of my lip kit. you can see by my signature picture below that the rear lip sits low.
other than that i had one minor problem (that only seemed to come when it was raining or snowing) that i fixed in 2 minutes with a pair of tin snips. underneath the passenger side there is a heat shield and right below it is where two of the catback system pipes connect together, so the flange was just tapping on the heat shield. when you go from a 1 3/4" pipe to a 2 1/2" pipe with flange, its a lot bigger so it sits way closer to the car than the old one. the heat shield is just a thin little piece of sheet metal so i just snipped away a little chunk on the edge with a pair of tin snips where it was tapping, and i dont hear it anymore. it literally took me two minutes or less to do.
basically, ive had it installed since early 06 and ive never had a single problem. the sound is a very deep humble tone when the car is at idle, and stays deep as you start driving or rev high. ive never heard a 'pop' or 'crack' like you hear on ricers and it sounds as good today as it did when i first got it.

Re: Exhaust Help
Okay, Since we are talking about exhausts I wanted to ask.
http://www.andysautosport.com/honda/...n00013864.html
to install this how high would I maybe need the car. I took my muffler off and left the resonator on *stupid thing can't come off unless I raise the car, but I wanted to know what would a safe height before I get started?
also I won't be buying this from andys, I'll direct buy I'll save around a 100$ unless I can find it cheaper.
also as for headers. I can't ever find any that give me the size of the downpipe. could someone help me by linking me to one that would fit this or better yet explaing to me how I find that?

get a header/downpipe combo, i know megan makes a good combo at a very very good price. i remember at one point there was a seller that was selling the header back megan kit. it was a header, downpipe, and full exhaust system for only about 500$
here is the megan header/dp combo:

its one of those nice systems that is quiet if you want it to be, and loud if you want it to be. if you turn on your car at night in a quiet neighbourhood and keep your foot light, its a deep quiet tone that wont wake anyone up so its definitely not obnoxious. its definitely loud enough for people to notice with regular driving, especially when you pin it. at idle its a nice deep rumble tone. no raspy or cracking or popping sounds, just a solid deep tone that gets louder as you drive or as you gear down.
just get this system and a sri and you will have the exact sound for your car that youre going for.

So at a idle there is still a loud deep tone coming from it?
Re: Exhaust Help
that is correct. if you turn your car on and its sitting there at idle, or if youre at a light or something, its still a nice deep rumbling tone that depends on what you consider 'loud'. i wouldnt recommend this unless i read your original post and knew 100% that this is exactly what you are looking for.
dont forget, this is a 4 cylinder 1.7 litre engine. not an 8 cylinder 5.7 litre, so when you sit at idle its not going to get a really mean growl that an engine with 3 times the displacement does. however, its definitely a nice deep rumble tone thats louder than stock and definitely wont be mistaken for stock either.
