2002 Honda Civic EX

Going to look at one tomorrow (most likely), and I was just getting the low-down on what to look for. It's got 88k on it, and they want around 5k for it.

Any special I should look for, like this not working right, etc. etc during the test drive?

if its an auto, the transmissions usually have problems like slipping. otherwise do the usual checks around and in the car, under the hood, etc. check leaks and stuff or any weird noises.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX

also depends on previous owners driving style. but as long as it was maintained properly (oil, oil filter, air filter, etc) it should be fine. my 2002 EX (MT) and I have about 130,000 mi and still going strong. just be ready for plenty of larger maintenance jobs ie. timing belt, water pump, etc.) around 100,000 mi.

automatics do have more tranny problems. so pay attn to any sounds like gearbox said.

this generation had callbacks for a headlight issue and SRS light due to seatbelt sensor malfunction. if those haven't been taking car of dealer should do it for free.

check for usual body damage around the bumpers. mismatched paint (slight shade diff) usually indicates body work from a possible collision. stripped paint on the nuts under the hood also means something has perhaps been worked on or replaced from collision. of course these might be cosmetic at least, or indicate possible accident, frame damage, at worst. either way might help you negotiate.

Take it to your trusted mechanic and have him evaluate the engine. 88k on a well-maintained Honda should not give you any issues besides the timing belt, water pump replacement stuff w/c maybe an addt'l $500.

Re: 2002 Honda Civic EX

Some good points up there. I would just add to check gaps between body panels for consistency. If the gap between a front fender and the door goes from narrow to wide for example, you might want to ask if it's been in an accident. There are many places you can get this info nowadays. Carfax.com for instance. Even if you have a to pay a few bucks to get the VIN checked out, it's worth it. You'll probably have to do a few things to it anyway after purchasing. The 2002s I believe had a recall on the struts (or was it only 2001...not sure). The driver's seat might rock back and forth due to bad bushings, and also your front compliance bushings on the lower control arms were also a weak point on these cars. Other than that, check for rust under the doors (if it was undercoated, that's a plus) and there's not much else. Definitely have a trusted mechanic look at it first, though. I know it's only $5,000...but still, getting ripped off and buying a lemon blows. Good luck man!
