Best Speed for gas milage?
I am preparing for 5000mile round trip roadie. I was wondering what speed would yield the best gas milage, and about how much gas milage i should expect. This car is new to me so I dont have a clue yet. It is a 2002 Civic DX Coupe/5Spd 101k miles, pretty stock, but a little weighed down with 4 12"s in the trunk.
Re: Best Speed for gas milage?
Okay first off....wtf. 4x 12 inch subwoofers in the trunk??
...it's a civic not a Suburban but to each his own i guess.
Peak gas mileage from your car on the highway is going to be achieved at 65mph. At 65mph I've achieved a CONSTANT average of 35 to 37 mpg.
However when driving that slow comes the complication of boredom and sleepiness. I drive cross country from California to Texas all the time and driving that slow has almost gotten me into a few accidents nodding off behind the wheel.
If you bump it up to 80 mph MY car gets around 28 to 32 mpg.
bump it even higher to 85 - 90 mph and you can expect anywhere from 20-25 mpg.
Driving at slower speeds I could always expect my civic to put out at least 350 miles...sometimes more...but nothing less. Be on the safe side and try to fill up at least by 250 since you never know when the next station might come up.
The weight of those subs won't impact you but maybe a couple mpg's but nothing serious.

Re: Best Speed for gas milage?
Thanks! Yeah, I'm in the process of trading my 4 Alpine type-r's for my friends 2 L7s. The only reason theyre even in there is i had them in my durango when i traded it for this civic. and i felt bad wasting them since i only bought them all 6 months ago. They do need to come out, they BARELY fit, and i had to put them in 2 small sealed dual boxes to fit at all.
Re: Best Speed for gas milage?
Being the route will give me limits between 65-70 i will probably stay at 70-75. which seems like it should still achieve a decent MPG.
Re: Best Speed for gas milage?
funny you mentioned that...i was curious to see what kind of gas mileage our cars delivered at 112mph on cruise control and no joke mine was doing 18 mpg.
when you can drive 110+ mph and still achieve better fuel efficiency than a suburban or any new truck cruising on the highway at 70 on the automarket today you know you've got a winner lol.

Re: Best Speed for gas milage?
I've always found and been told that about 58-60mph is the best. I used to get about 40-42, that was all highway driving to texas, but I only did that for one day then i was like eff it, i bought a radar detector for a reason and just went 90 the rest of the way
