Cold Air Intake Decision

I have an 04 Civic Ex Coupe with the resonator taken out. I want to install a CAI but don't know what to buy. Will I notice a difference between a $180 K&N and a $300 AEM?

Re: Cold Air Intake Decision

Nope, their almost all the same. Just the matter of quality of the CAI, but same effect...barely any gains.

You wont notice any difference between a $60 AEM dryflow filter + ebay pipe vs. a $300 AEM CAI

Re: Cold Air Intake Decision

If you go to autozone, they make an intake pipe that will work probably just as well as an AEM for 39.99. Then just buy a filter. Unless you have money to blow, this will work just as well as an Injen, AEM, K&N, etc. within +/- 1-2 hp, but an intake only adds a few ponies anyway.

Re: Cold Air Intake Decision

Thanks that helps, seeing as how I'm a struggling college student. I'm probably going to get the short ram, then after I finish paying my car off, getting cat-back exhaust and coilovers.

Re: Cold Air Intake Decision

Ok man, Iv got the solution for you. Go buy a filter from advance or autozone. They make some that come with interchangeable sizes (not the filter but the neck fitting). Take all of your stock intake plumbing out except the very top box that sits on top of the throttle body and contains the OEM filter. Remove the OEM filter. Now there will be a hole on the right hand side of the box where the stock plumbing used to connect, all you need to do is put a filter on there using a silicone coupling. That would serve the same purpose as a short ram and it only cost the price of the filter plus coupling and I believe I got my filter for 26 bucks and a coupling is less than 10. You will definitely HEAR the difference and maybe feel it slightly. As far as getting a more expensive setup and its effectiveness... the AEM V2 uses different size pipes to create airflow velocity coming in and then an air volume section. Smaller diameter pipes or longer pipes create air velocity as to where bigger diameter/ shorter pipes create air volume. The weapon R short ram intake features a double stacked filter that has a stream of air running through the center at higher velocity than the air coming in from around the sides. This creates a low pressure area (when the high velocity stream of air passes through the center of the volume stream of air) which weapon R claims helps to draw more air in. But still with all this, ur only gaining 5-7hp. With the autzone filter/ stock top air box im sure you would gain 4-5hp. So really, these companies have done research and development to produce the highest possible gains from an intake but even at that, its only 2hp more than a standard CAI/SR made by the same company. So I guess at 400$ you're just paying for the name but they do look good! lol Good luck man
