finally after eons of murmur, I finally bought a head unit, speakers, amp & sub.
SONY CDX-GT820IP, Infinity 5350A 5CH, 50x4+150x1, POLK 6.5 db651s, Polk MM2084 8" subs

The problem I am facing is with the subs, I have two 8" POLK MM2084D. I know I need to put them in trunk (obvious choice to me), here is where I can not locate anything.

I do not want to put up a false panel, since I ride my road bike a lot and I use the civic to carry it around. So any big boxes are out of question.

To me it seems most practical to put them on either side of the trunk behind wheel wells & brake lights facing towards the rear seat. Did any one have any enclosures or know of anything that may work for me or best way to make a decent one.

Please advise.......im going nuts since I can not figure out.....

didn't you see the $400 worth of dynamat in his box. there is no way that thing rattles. Make your own boxes, save hundreds. I used to use 3/4inch MDS board for it. I would put subfloor caulk between the wood and use 2 inch wood screws about every inch and a half or 2 inches on all the joints. the weakest points of the boxes were probably the speaker wire terminal dealies or the actual rim of the sub you screw it to the box with. Afterwards I'd attach some brackets to the side and screw it to my trunk, then hit it with some adhesive spray and put the carpet of my choice on (actually of my friends' choices). With some 8inch subs this will be the best time ever to build your first box as it isn't under the stress of a 15inch sub, or bigger.

and the kitty hair isn't that hard to work with............ ok it sucks. I probably would have done it lazier and not taken the box back out after building it and just kitty haired it directly on top of the dynamat. that spare is definitely not in his trunk anymore... unless he just puts it on his new setup?

Subs firing up will always make **** rattle in plastic car... and no... there is no spare tire...

Started building some custom sub boxes. fiberglass enclosures, btw i am keeping the spare tire...putting them behind brake lights.... mounting the amp in the spare tire compartment...going to enclose it with some metal and have a cooling fan...which turns on with accessory (unless if my head unit has enough power on its amp line to run a small relay). will post pictures as i do stuff.

what are the depth of your subs? build a shallow box.

4.75" is the depth of my subs. It is going to have may be 1-2" clearance in the back....the volume is going to be around .35 cu ft (~41cups). measured my fiberglass it was close to 43 so i just need to do some shaving.

Well Here are my finished subs. Lot of work for a guy who never did it before, but I am so happy to have a functional trunk...

totally worth it.

Now I can use my trunk space to full extent, with having a spare, jack, and all the junk you want to carry around.

What I got finally.

Head Unit: Sony CDX-GT820IP
Equalizer: Pioneer DEQ7600
Amp: Infinity R5450a (5-channel amp)
Speaker: POLK db651 6.5" (all four)
Sub Woofer: POLK MM2084 8" x two of them (4ohms total resistance)

Since before this I never worked with fiberglass, so it was difficult for me. But the second one went smoother.

The boxes are two piece, fused together. I have a mdf board face.. with fiberglass back.

To create the fiberglass back I used thin aluminum foil with double sided tape to form a shape of the trunk lining. Then i started to build layers of fiberglass inside the trunk itself. Two layers.. then let it dry. Now you got the shape you want for the box. Just build up more layers once you clean the aluminum foil. Now make the mdf front face and fuse the box mdf together. Make sure the location of the hole in mdf is in right location so there is enough depth to accommodate the sub. {you do have to trim the mdf to fit the shape of the box...}

I just gave you the gist of the things. Will see if I have any pictures of the boxes.. and will post if i find some. Will take some pictures of finished box inside the trunk.

thanks a bunch, i just really dont want a bulky rectangular box in the back of my car, i like a more sleek look. thats why i like your idea.

i built mine mostly out of wood .still working on it but here is a pic . it is .8 cubic feet and there is a jl 13tw5 going in it

that does look really good, i would be scared to work with fiber glass since i have never worked with it before, so your all wood box sounds like the right plan for me.

yea the tw5 is a shallow mount and the part where the wheel well hump is will be fiberglass but ill post the progress its kinda slow been working alot.

Doesn't the material in which you make the box out of effect the sound that is produced? Thats what I always thought, since some materials are "softer" then others they wouldn't shake as much?

Yes, the interior makes a difference, some people put sound deadener inside the box to make a much tighter bass, it really depends on what you want though.

If you guys follow Steve Meade on youtube, you might learn some stuff about car audio, that guy is the master
