<---newbie with a civic again

Ok, hi i'm new to the forums. I have owned a 92 civic hb in the past but i just purchased a 2001 civic ex coupe.

I do have a question about the car, i read on the internet that the ex coupe came standard with vtec-e, is that a good or bad sign if i'm directed more into the performance spectrum of the motor rather then fuel consumption, or does it just not matter? Suprisingly my civic hb was a vx with vtec-e also, it didn't take to well to the the sohc vtec ecu i threw at it. My question is that with this newer motor design can it changed over just by adding a vtec ecu and not a vtec-e?

Re: <---newbie with a civic again

I'm no expert, but I wasn't aware/know much of the vtec-e in the 7thgens...I know the vtec-e was more developed for fuel economy over power, when compared to the origonal vtec design. If I were you I would be happy you have the ex instead of the dx and lx models without vtec. If you were only looking for power, then a search would probably clue you that these motors aren't built for power, let along making them powerful with bolt-ons. K20 swaps are pricey, but the most popular method of getting power out of the EM2s.

And I don't know the answer to your question about putting a sedan ECU, in your coupe.

Usually alot of the common vtec questions don't get a prompt answer, and with you including that you are wanting adding power to your D17 and being a newbie...most people would pass until you searched and found your answer.

I don't know if this helps, but thought I would post something...

VTEC-Economy. Thats what it stands for. Its a SOHC, so theres no switchover to a performace camshaft. And the ECU's are for the most part interchangeable, but you must match the transmission and engine code.

ie d17a2 with manual ecu cannot be used in a d17a2 with auto

Re: <---newbie with a civic again

thanks, i'm fairly familiar when it comes to hondas i had a eg that i swapped a zc/vtec in. My question i was going towards was, if it would work, basically make it so the vtec does not kick in so early, so per say vtec=e kicks in at low rpm, can it be pushed back to run further down in the rpm like the sedan with standard vtec.

ok say i look up a cam say from crower which they make on for the ex coupe and sedan with the same d17a2 engine code, internals of the head should be the same correct or am i wrong? and if so, would there be a problem swapping over to the ex sedan ecu? they possibly could not be the same ecu.

this is some what of an experiment pretty much. to see if its cost effective to get a little bit better performance without having to reprogram or rechip or buy a piggyback control system for vtec.

Re: <---newbie with a civic again

if you wanna change the VTEC changover, get engline managemnt. the sedans vtec and the coupes vtec are the same. idk why you would wanna even switch the ecu's.
