why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

its because I got 18's on there.
My car is in desperate need of lowering. I dont wanna go too low, maybe an inch and a half, because I live in upstate NY where its winter 75 percent of the year. Im kind of a noob when it comes to suspension, so dont make fun of me too bad. What would be the best way to go about this? I dont have much money, so cheaper is better, but I dont want some piece of trash that cost 25 bucks shipped off of Ebay neither. Also, the word on the street is that you can get away with just new springs if your only dropping 1.5" and you dont need a camber either? Is that right or what? Ive been looking at this site forever, but just recently signed up. You guys got some sick rides on here! Thanks for the help, all feedback is appreciated!

Want a drop? Don't want to spend alot? Get springs, you'll still need a camber kit but it won't be a massive drop to where it's extrememly Neccessary like me

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

thanks buddy. All I need is springs? Ive seen skunk 2's (I believe there called) for like 100 bucks a set. Are they any good. I seen cheap ones on ebay for like 30 bucks but i wanna stay away from them. What springs do you suggest? To install them, I need a spring tensioner thing (forgot what its called) right? Where can I get one of those and what is it called, or should I just have them installed at a shop. Id rather do it myself to save money/have fun. As far as the camber kit goes, what brand do you recommend? also, how hard are they to install? From the looks of them it looks as though they just bolt on. Im sure theres a DIY for both of these on here somewhere and someone will yell at me, but oh well.
One last thing, do I need to worry about rubbing with a 1.5 inch drop? seems there should be plenty of room. Im runnin 225/40-18's. Any help is appreciated.

When i was in your shoes i went with Eibach springs, some go with neuspeed, goldline, or tein. I would stick with reputable brands. Definitely stay away from the ebay brands plz. As far as installing them i left that to the pros, it cost me 100 bucks but well worth it. I have a SPC Camber kit, look it up! It's last me 5years so far and still going strong, i installed it myself, all you gotta do is bolt it up! Anyone can do it. With 225 tires though you might cut it close with rubbing but im like 80% sure you won't have a problem.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

just get an ebay camber kit + good springs. the skunk springs are very rough and i wanna say they drop more than 1.5" but not sure on that. theres lots of DIY's on here. you may need to roll your fenders with a baseball bat in order to stop rubb.

ive got the skunk2s also. The drop looks great, conservative about of drop.

You also get that "less like a boat, more like a go-kart" feel, which has been the biggest payoff about the skunk2s. Plus, braking is immediate, with almost zero nosedive. I love em.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

So Skunks are the way to go if I want about a 1.5 drop? I want the suspension to be tight. Im not lookin for the boat feel. When I buy the springs, do they need to be specific to my year/model, or are they more universal? Also, where in the hell can I get an effin spring tensioner? And how much are they? Im going to do this all by myself using the DIY on the site. And one more stupid question, what is the difference between a spring and a coilover? The coilovers I have seen just look like the springs with some bushings n ish with em. Sorry for the noob questions, but I dont know jack about suspension. Thanks to all who helped out thus far!

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

coilovers are fully adjustable for height and have an integrated damper, springs just sit in a permanent position around a damper. you might be able to RENT a spring COMPRESSOR at home depot or something of that sorts.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

I used to live in New York, I never seen winter the whole time I was there. It just rained. One day we got about an inch of snow and they closed down all the businesses!

If you go with a drop less than an inch it might not be worth it but you might get away with not having a camber kit. But you should still get a wheel alignment. So basically:
suspension change = cost of springs + cost of camber kit + cost of wheel alignment
= cost of springs + cost of camber kit + $60

So just take your budget, subtract 60 and work with what you have left for springs and a camber kit. The Tein springs are good, as well as Skunk2, Eibach and H&R. And I think there are only 2 camber kits that fit, Eibach and.....is the other one Ingalls? I can't remember.

And you don't need a spring compressor, there's a D.I.Y. here on this site if you search, you can do it yourself with just a ratchet set.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

I live in Rochester, right next to lake ontario. We get incredible amounts of snow. It sucks somethin fierce. How can I compare and contrast the different springs? Like which ones are the softest, and which are the hardest? Im definately going to drop more than an inch. I would love to do 2 inches but I think Im going to get some rubbing if I go that low. I only got about 1.75 of space in the front and about 1.25 inches in the back as it is, so a 1.5 would be perfect. Another stupid question though, how do I adjust the camber? Im thinking I need flat ground and just eyeball it? Is there a way to measure it or somethin? Also, I know the back cambers a lot when you drop so I definately need a rear camber, but how about the front? I got no problem gettin it but Im just wondering if its needed. How much do the fronts camber with a drop?
Again, thanks for gettin back to me and educatin an uneducated ****.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

All you need to fix the camber in the front is a 16 millimeter bolt from Home Depot, but it's usually less than a degree so you don't need them. I dropped my car and then took a 10,000 kilometer road trip, my tires are fine.

As for the drop, I got almost 2 inches and it rubbed until I got the wheel alignment and I'm on Tein S-Techs so if you get those you'll be fine. Just be careful of who you have in the back seat. No fat chicks! As for lining up the camber, get a long level with the three different bubble tubes in it and lay it flat against the side of your wheel. When the air bubble is in the center, between the lines, you have zero camber. But also, the shop doing your wheel alignment should adjust your camber for free. If they don't know how, don't give them your keys.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

The main brand of camber kits that i see people use for our cars are ingalls, spc, and eibach. as for the one on ebay thats a steal of a deal lol but how long will it last the weathering?

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

i put h&r springs on my car and it lowered it 1.3 inches and they ride like stock. and as far as the camber kit goes you might be able to sneek by without one but in the long run you will want one or you will be replacing your tires twice a year.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

I would worry about the amount of snow packing up within your wheel wells from lowering it; is this a commom problem or am I just paranoid as usual?

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

tein springs will give you a 1.5 inch drop all around. The ride quality is great and a set should be around $200. I doubt you'll need a camber kit.

Re: why does my 05 coupe look like a monster truck?

yeah i got a set of tein s techs for around 170 if im not mistaken. claims 1.4 drop in the rear and 1.3 up front. looks good and rides very well. i love them. i dont have a camber kit, but might not be a bad idea.

as for a spring compressor, its handy but not entirely necessary as long as your careful. when you loosen the nut on top of the strut the sucker my go for a little ride w/o using the compressor. and with 2 people you can reassemble the strut pretty easily with out a spring compressor.
