So, I've had my Civic for almost 7 years now, and I've always wondered: what does that little red button sort of built into the driver's footrest do? You know, this one:

Actually come to think...Honda as they built your Civic knew that you were strugglin wit a bad set of females so they installed that so wen they give you lip...just press it and well out the sunroof they go...so u bes give Honda a pat on the back for that one!!!! If you look close under one of the panels you probably have a label that says 1 of 10...consider yourself lucky! LMAO!!!

Haha, thanks for the humor guys. Yeah, I'm the original owner. Turns out, it is just a bolt (it won't push in like a button or anything). Can't think of why it's painted red unless it's just because the car itself is red. I saw a an older (5th gen) Civic coupe on eBay that was red and had the same deal on it's footrest. Anyway, thanks for input...

It's red because it got hit with paint when they sprayed the empty chassis at the factory.

Welcome to the idea of a lean production system- to reduce costs through streamlining the assembly and to maximize efficiency. If you look closer, you'll see its not the head of a bolt, and that the threads are pointed up and a nut threads down to hold it all together.

FYI- Mechanics paint the tops of bolts all the time for reference cues- like if a mechanic strips the bolts on your air box, he might paint them yellow to give who ever is under the hood a clue that something up. They also use dabs of paint during inspections- kinda like how you use check marks when doing something complicated on paper.
