Re: Short Shift....thoughts
i keep meaning to buy one myself, but i havent seen any real feedback on this?
i know the shifting is a tad sloppy on these civics, but not bad enough to kill you? so are these Short shift kits worth the buck?
i really would like some feedback myself!

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
As far as short shifters goes, you just have too look online at different forums, thats what I did when I had my 1998 Civic Si, I went online and I found out some things then I went from there, one thing I would say is do research on who and where you buy from, it really all depends on how much money you are looking to spend on it. I had bought a short shifter and a stage 3 racing clutch by XTD together for $200 brand new only because I got lucky and I was shopping around, as far as getting a short shifter it defintly is a lot nicer shifting gears because your not in neutral as long if your racing, but really its up to you and how you drive. Do you want that extra second of acceleration..... Of course you do. lol
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
okay this may be stoopid *** **** but....
you said "it defintly is a lot nicer shifting gears because your not in neutral as long if your racing", now by this do you mean there is no actual "N" in between gears? what i mean by this is do you have to be on the clutch to the floor at all times like say at a light? or can you still let off the clutch with the car running/idle?
man...im gonna hear bout this one......

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
I mean, when you press on the clutch your stopping your engine from continuing to move forwards, its considered neutral. A short shifter minimizes the movment in throw between gears. Just because you have a short shifter doesnt mean you cant let off the clutch in idle. the mechanics are still the same your just replacing the shifter alone. Got it?
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
Instead of having to move the shifter 4 inches down to go from 1st to 2nd (for example), it will only need to be moved 3 inches. Yes, you can still leave it out of gear in nutral w/ the clutch out.
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
I've also been looking into this lately...
All info would help me also
here goes a few adaptors and a Revo Unit that I've found
TWM Shifter Adaptor
Revo Technica
DC Shifter Adaptor

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
so how are TWM short shift kits?
Cuz im thinking on buying a kit from them which comes with:
- bronzoil cable bushings
- shifter bushings
- base bushings
...and the shifter adapter are CNC machined from high strength steel

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
My friend has a TWM shifter for his Matrix and he also installed the bushing set. He was the one that actually pointed me to them. He said the customer service from this company is awesome and the products they carry are quality built. These are his words not verbatim but in general. I was leaning towards ordering that kit myself for the Civic. From what he has told me.
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
when you buy the kit what parts do you need for it......like what is the bushing set.....
so what should i look for when buying them.....
or do all the things i need come in a set together.....

The TWM and DC adaptor kit re-positions the actual stock shifter for less throw time. I think the bushings just adds to the rigidity of the shift being thrown. Hopes this helps.

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
get the revo, for 100 bucks it is a great mod, i have one and in know foos does too, i love mine, its 40% reduction in throw, and really easy to install too, and its a whole lot cheaper than the b&m
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
you guys should know that you can do the same thing by cutting off the bracket and moving it up 3/4 of an inch or so. you can probably take the shifter out at someones shop and have it done for like 20 bucks. Mine looks like factory and I didnt add any weight with a bolt on peice. I added those bushings from that cap yoda dude and put them in as well. My throw is only about 2.25" if that, front to back and it shifts like a million bucks. I actually took 1/2 inch off the height while I was at it, and tigged it in all purty. Its made of real high quality **** and it welds up awesome. I actually broke a shifter cable a year or so ago being an idiot so theres certainly no issues with strength.

wouldnt it be better (and prolly cheaper) to get a new tranny with a new engine/swap???
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
I went with the DC shift adaptor. Was really easy to instal just make sure the allen bolt is threaded all the way through. The allen bolt was the only snag I found but once I figured that part out it was pretty easy. Took about 15 minutes for the whole install. The throw is nice and solid.
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
just get the revo. It reduces throw by 40%, is super easy to install ( just take out the old shifter assembly and put the new one in its place) and it cuts the height of the shift **** by about an inch...depending on the shift ****. Shifting is much crisper and faster. It's got to be, short of boosting, one of the favored mods on this site.

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
I wouldnt advise this but I would do it 100 times again
I just bought one of these things

used some JB weld to keep it from rattling and coming off.
Then I cut the shifter shaft that the handle screws on to and grinded it down until the pleather cover and handle could fit on. I then put the shortened shaft back on by welding and what was left of the JBweld. I only flick my wrist to shift now. It has worked fine for about 3 years now. If you plan on doing this pick up a spare shifter assembly before you start cutting and grinding.
Warning. this idea comes from the guy who recomends removing the passenger head rest(when driving solo) and placing the 2 metal bars between the center console and the passenger seat to make a free arm rest.

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
The only thing I've read about the Revo is that the screw can become stripped if adjusted too much. Other then that nothing but great reviews. I like the height of the stock shifter but wanted to shorten the actual throw between gears. I'm a little taller so I like resting my arm on the arm rest when shifting. Thats the reasoning behind me getting just the adaptor kit.

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
ok....i did however look online at the revo shifter and it says it comes with a lifetime warrenty.....
http://www.revotechnica.com/racing_short_shifter.htm
so if something does get broken.....i can always get it fixed for free......
and do i need to get a new shift **** and a boot or does the stock one fit the revo one

Re: Short Shift....thoughts
The Revo should be threaded just like the OEM shifter. The boot will fit but will be a little "bunched" up more due to the shifter being shorter. Look at some pics of some em2's with short shift levers
Re: Short Shift....thoughts
Hey,
I just recently got the B&M short shifter for my 2001 Civic EX. And I loooove it! It's so much better than the stock shifter. In addition to the short throw (It gives you the option when installing for 25% or 35% reduction, I went with 35%) , it also is much sturdier feeling than the stock shifter. It's not rigid or anything, it just feels much more solid. I would really suggest getting the B&M shifter, I have nothing else to compare it too though, besides the stock setup. Installation was a breeze.......yes installation....about 40 minutes....BUT...taking the stock shifter housing out of the car and removing the shifter from the housing.....took wayyy to long. Probably about 2 hours or so. Everything you need to install the shifter comes with the B&M kit, besides tools. Sooo, I love it. If you have any questions or I missed something, let me know.
