Rust Protection

I live in Upsate NY so rust due to road salt is a big issue come winter time. I noticed my strut bolts on top are already pretty rusted. I was wondering what can be done to limit rust build up and stop current rust from spreading. I was thinking of getting a can of WD-40 and hitting all the problem spots.

Re: Rust Protection

Re: Rust Protection

You can try a can of Carb Cleaner. $.97 at your local Zoo (aka Walmart). I recon high-end cars for a guy and we use this to get anything from caked-on brake dust, to paint, to various greases and fluids (gets superglue off your hands too!).

So I figure if you get some of that, spray it on the problem area, let sit for 10 seconds and then hit it with a wire brush and scrub...that should do. Ofcourse, this is for surface rust only. If you've got those nasty little orange holes in your fenders, thats a whole diff. story!

Hope this helps!

P.S. spray on undercoating is good preventitive maintenence on the underbody....A quick dab of clearcoat on the surface rust you just removed would be a less noticable way to go to protect those areas.

Re: Rust Protection

I don't know about using clearcoat... it may look good but i think it might bind up the threads if he ever needs to uninstall his suspension. Lithium grease is easily removable and a good rust protectant. That's what i'd use. My $0.02.

Re: Rust Protection

this might help i leave in Michigan same problem. I just got a brand new 2007 Dodge Dakota Quadcab and i used 3m rubber undercoat the professional grade on every piece of metal on the truck. Under the truck is nothing but rubber up on the side of the bed inside by the wheelwell is done and i took the rear bumper and front bumper off and spread everything. My civic goes away on saturday and when i am done with it every piece of metal will be rubber coated.

Hope this helps and you can get it at murrays discount auto
