question about the 1.7 non vtec
question about the 1.7 non vtec
Just a quick question here. I have a 2004 Civic LX 5 speed. It has the 1.7 "Non Vtec" engine. There is a guy in my auto class who has a decked out Civic and 'apparently' knows a lot about Hondas. He said my 'Non Vtec' has something resembling Vtec on the exhaust cam lobes that Honda started to do in the mid 90s?
Is he right or not? Not that it makes a difference, but I'm just curious.
And while on the topic of the 1.7... what kind of longevity does this engine have? I have 65000 on it and have owned it since 55000. I have full dealer warranty up to 100k and have been having them do full synthetic oil changes since I bought it. Doesn't use a drop of oil and gets average 35+mpg (few times I've seen 45mpg)
Thanks!

Okay, that's kind of neat. The guy seems like kind of a tool so I thought I would double check. I just wanted to research it more.
Since it is true... what RPM is it supposed to kick in at? It it something I can even feel? I tried google and such and haven't found any information regarding it.
Thanks!

Re: question about the 1.7 non vtec
wait what? no wat the hell that isnt right. i dont think it is. im pretty damn sure thats not right. our 1.7L vtec motors do have what hes talking about. its not "true" vtec meaning the cam lobe changes on the exhaust side. but the non-vtec d17s dont have any kind of cam lobe change.. or else whats the point of the d17 vtec that i have lol
if u dont have vtec..then u dont have it, in any way shape or form. or you can have a motor that says vtec.. and is in one way or another.. vtec lol hes probably just talking about SOHC VTEC.. since sohc isnt true vtec its more like a fuel saver. even if u do have it.. it doesnt really "kick" in... it activates but u wont feel anything.. so knowing wat rpm it comes in at doesnt really matter..

Re: question about the 1.7 non vtec
Hmm... because he distinctively said the "non VTEC" engines have some sort of exhaust feature that locks the valves to the lobe...
either I'm hearing things or the engine changes it's tune a little between 3000-4000 rpm... or that could just be me winding out a tiny engine...
hmm
I'm just wonderin about what's under my hood is all

Re: question about the 1.7 non vtec
that is just your powerband... every engine has a powerband... the lx you can really feel it after 4000 rpms... thats if you have mods... stock i think you dont feel anything....
Re: question about the 1.7 non vtec
More like 90 at the wheels. No, there is absolutely no vtec on a non vtec engine. Vtec engages a separate lobe/set of lobes. You have 4 lobes per cylinder on the camshaft of a non vtec engine. Period. There is no variation in your valve lift whatsoever.

Re: question about the 1.7 non vtec
on the d17, think there is only one. on an ivtec, there should be more, as it is changing both the intake, and exhaust valving. on the d17, it's only the exhaust changing.

yea but thats at the crank..so you're never going to feel any of that power, torque will also just be lower than the hp... it really doesnt matter how much.. but ur friend doesnt know wat hes talking about.. i was right.

Well like I said I thought this kid was a tool. He and a few other guys were talkin smack about his car, their car, etc and who's fastest. I was just like "I'll pass more gas stations than you guys." And then they proceeded to laugh and then asked about my car.
My mods include: Blue light on dash for fire department. Dual horn setup to get rid of the weak Honda horn. Other than that I just do maintenance and keep it as clean as I can.
Thanks for the info guys!

Okay, I got mine with 55k I'm at 65k now and still doin great. I am about 80% gentle 20% hard on it, I drive pretty granny most of the time but i do go WOT sometimes and chirp second gear, ha. I do fully synthetic changes every 5k so far and I figure the less I mod on the car and more i maintain it and keep it normal the better.
Some of the "CB7" accords go 200k plus no prob so I don't doubt me getting at least 100-150k out of this civic.
thanks
