I think its going to be important for owners to understand the complexity of the new CVT transmission.
There are two main modes a) Regular and b) Sport.
The shift paddles will override the automatic shifting in Regular mode only temporarily. So, if you are in regular mode, you can shift down when coming to a stop or if you want to slow down and use that in combination with the disc brakes. But as soon as you press the accelerator, it goes back to automatic shifting.
In Sport mode, its also completely automatic, but as soon as you touch the shift paddles, its now in manual shift mode, and the only way to shift is with the paddles. There is a dash indicator to show you what shift position you are in.
The only thing I have found that's a little cumbersome is when driving through tight higher speed curves when the steering wheel turns along with the paddle shifters making them useless. In that case, you'd have to rely on sport mode in the normal configuration.
All modes can be used with the ECON button. But Im not sure why anybody would want to use the ECON button with the sport mode.

Re: 2014 Civic EX CVT / Making it work for you
I guess they assumed people getting the coupe want a more sporty feel than those who get the sedan.
Bummer for me, I just have a lot of friends and need the 4 doors for convenience lol, no kids yet, hopefully none anytime soon haha.
I'd imagine though that the shifters are just for fun, in all practicality I'm sure the CVT will do a better job of power delivery in it's automatic mode than anyone can in the manual mode, because it still is a CVT and not a traditional transmission with set gears.
Even in a track setting the S mode keeps the rev's close as possible to the power band to allow for quick pick-ups out of turns.
Be interesting to see a car review where a trained driver tries the CVT in s mode around a track, then tries manual shifting to compare.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

To be honest, I think the CVT is tuned for the best mileage in the automatic mode. I cant stand it in the city, or on a freeway entrance ramp. I only use the auto now with the ECON on on the free way. In manual, it does rev higher which seems to work for me better in the city. I think its a good transition for me. The CVT took me a while to get used to. If it wasn't for the manual mode, I'm not sure I would have kept the car at all.
Im an old guy, so 4 doors just seems wrong to me. But I understand the younger generation's need for a 4 door. Before I traded in my 2005 2 door coupe, I only had people back there once. Which is why I almost got a CR-Z. But, I settled on the idea that I could put someone back there if I needed with the Civic Coupe.
The rear seat has better access from the passenger front seat. It not only folds the back forward, but the whole seat moves forward with one lever.
That was a good post you gave. I learned a lot about the differences. I bumped up your score... FYI.

Re: 2014 Civic EX CVT / Making it work for you
I do need to play around with the settings, I've barely touched any of them lol.
Also, if anyone is curious, I pay 132$ a month for full coverage on the new 2014.
Oddly enough, my wife pays 108$ for full coverage on the 2006.
(I'm 20 and she is 21)
I also have 1 speeding ticket.

Access it with the INFO button just above the redundant volume control on the steering wheel left side. All menus are presented in the upper tier small monitor. To change something, use the arrows on the volume control and the middle button to choose the item you selected.
Good Luck.
