I have a 2014 Civic EX-L sedan with about 32k miles with CVT. I have noticed that when I accelerate from a stop or low speed up an incline under light to moderate acceleration I can get a pretty pronounced throttle or engine surge while holding the throttle at a steady point. It will then smooth out after it surges pretty heavily a few times or until I mash the throttle down harder. I can't imagine this is normal as it's really annoying. To others in the car it probably feels like I'm mashing and lifting my foot on the throttle. It may do it a little on the flat at times as well but I don't really notice it. It doesn't seem to do it every time either. I can't tell if it's the actual throttle varying or the CVT hunting. I just know the RPMs will go up and down and I can feel it.

Has anyone else noticed anything like this or have any ideas before I start talking to the dealer?

Figure out a driving pattern that is very repeatable, easy to make it act up.

Get to the dealer, show them the problem.
Take the tech for a ride, demonstrate the problem--make it happen-- so everyone involved knows exactly what your complaint is.

Try to make this test drive happen in 10 minutes or less....because time is money. Don't joyride all over the countryside.




While there at the dealer, see if you can take an identical car for a test drive....see if it does the same thing yours does.



Has your car had the CVT recall completed yet?

Quick question on the CVT recall.
What were they? Is the new generation of CVT better than my 2004 Civic's..... if not, I will continue to stay away from Honda CVT for the long run.

IMO they drive a helluva lot better than the old CVT.

Old design used a "start clutch" to couple the engine and trans together, (most that I encounter shudder and grumble as you take off from a stop.)

New design uses a real fluid coupling with lockup function (a normal torque converter as found in any automatic trans) and feels much more like a normal automatic transmission.


The recall on these is just a software update.

Still too new to tell IMO. Very few issues seen at my small dealer, but that's not the rest of the country/world.
Mostly good so far overall, with a few hiccups and glitches reported here and there...as would be expected with just about any product.
