Hi, my father-in-law would like to carry is motorized scooter (the kind old folks ride in malls) on the back of his 2013 (might be 2014) Civic 4 door sedan but the hitch mounted carriers need a 2" hitch receiver and all the hitches I've seen are only 1 1/4". Does anyone know where I can get a 2" hitch receiver? If I need to have it custom made, would it be easier to get a 1 1/4" hitch and then have someone modify that one?

I'm not overly concerned about the weight. The Civic is rated for 200 lbs tongue weight (I think) and the whole thing including the carrier might be about 240 lbs so it will be a bit over but just barely and he probably won't even use it that often.

Custom is the only option I would know of. There are adapters to make a 1 1/4" to a 2" but that would move the carrier even further out away from the car increasing the weight point.

It would probably be easiest to buy a pre-made one and have the receiver tube changed out.

Thanks for the responses. I spoke to a few welders in the area and it sounds like getting an existing 1 1/4" hitch and then modifying it to have a 2" tube isn't too difficult to do so I'll probably go that route.

I would strongly advise you NOT to do that. Hitches have a weight rating for a reason. If you go over the tongue weight even by 2 pounds it can seriously damage the chassis. Not too mention, the possibility of the carrier completely falling off the hitch because the hitch cannot support the weight.
