Grinding gear teeth? How often is bad?

So I just grinded my gears twice this morning for less than half of a second each. I have had grinded before ranging from half a second to around one second. This grinding has happened to me about 5-7 times. I just to my '07 civic si this July/ August. Am I doing major or effective damage to my car?

Thanks guys,
Mark

Quit doing that or you WILL hurt it.

Figure out:
Is it your technique that is the problem?
Or is it something wrong inside the transmission?

Is it only one particular gear that is giving the problem??

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who ****ed up. This morning I thought it was engaged but it was only halfway. The other times I was getting out of my driveway(pretty steep) and grinded because I forgot to brake then switch to reverse and whenever else was probably me being a bad driver. I just want to know if this will give a different feel in my car, even if its bad.

Re: Grinding gear teeth? How often is bad?

If you grind hard enough or often enough to seriously damage synchro blocker rings and gear teeth, then it will keep grinding gears (unless shaft speeds are perfectly matched for the shift).

For sure. Thank you man. I know its bad. I just keep forgetting about it. My incidents are spaced apart enough for me to forget on top of work and school. Would you, in average, know how many times you'd have to grind before gear teeth and etc. start to **** up?

No.
A little damage is done each time. How much? No idea.
How many times does it take to kill it? No clue.
Every case can be different, and many factors of force are involved.
Crash gears hard enough, it might only take one time. Gently? Maybe a lot.

Re: Grinding gear teeth? How often is bad?

So when I shift to third it seems a little smoother of a shift. I'm guessing that's bad??

What are you trying to say here?
All the other gears sound like hell or something?

I'm guessing that's bad??
"Smooth" is good (to me, in my mind), but I have no idea what you are meaning with the word.

If you aren't very familiar with manual transmissions, I suggest you take it to someone who is familiar with them and ask them to give it a test drive (describe your concerns though, don't make them guess why you are there).
