Some questions
Some questions
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here it goes.
I got a new 08 civic Si coupe and was wondering how I can add about 40-50 HP without adding any noise (or quiet the noise if possible). What would be my options? I would not want to add turbo, seems too expensive. I know little about engine work.

Re: Some questions
you could do a k24 bottom end to give you some torque...but you would have to know about motor work
40-50 is a high mark without forced induction. well cams, race header, cai, exhaust, and kpro might get you in that ballpark....but you would eb looking at about $2-3k(depending on if you get a good deal on kpro) at that point and might as well go turbo. as far as not adding noise...get a quiet exhaust system

Re: Some questions
well most mods that would give you a significant gain in power will make it 'louder' ... the whole point of modding the car is to let more air in and let more air out basically and with that you get a louder car. dont see why you would be interested in 50hp without getting a new exhaust, which is a very key component of any engine build.
with that said the only way i think you could get 50hp without any added noise is nitrous.

Re: Some questions
Cause he's actually got taste.
I'm with you, man. I hate loud civics. Thing most people don't realize is that turbos make decent mufflers if you've got a fairly high quality exhaust system. My dream build involves full 3" tubing, but two or three resonators and a muffler. I want high flow, but I want it quiet.
That's about the only solution I can imagine. You're not going to be able to make 40-50 horespower without dropping some money, unless you're talking about nitrous. An All-motor build or turbo is really your only options, and supplement those with a quiet custom exhaust and you've got something.

Re: Some questions
then start looking for junk on ebay
http://www.ebay.com/
http://www.ebay.com/
eBay car parts, 9 times out of 10 will break within a year, get you laughed at, do nothing, or a combination of the above. (Assuming we're talking about no-name parts, not name-brand parts bought off eBay, obviously.)
But seriously. You want a nice car but you don't want to pay for it? Get real.

Re: Some questions
i wasnt kidding...if he doesnt want to buy quality "expensive" parts...then he needs to go look for some junk off of ebay
i mentioned the cheapest HP gaining mods in my first post...with the exception of kpro and k24. If those are too expensive then i dont know what to say besides ebay

Re: Some questions
you could also look into a throttle body spacer... and thermal throttle body and intake mani gaskets...those supposively can add HP...i know they make them for the k20a2 but i am not sure if they will fit your z1
do some research on those...i know for the k20a2 you can get the spacer, 2x thermal TB gaskets and the intake mani gasket for right around $150...and going by advertised numbers you can gain roughly 6-10HP at the wheels with all of that

Re: Some questions
TBS dont give any power- I have one... it sounds cool, but its nothing.
I'm tired. I keep coming back to this thread to see the updates.
SC will cost you at least 3k...sounds like you'll have to pay for it if ya wanna go that route.
The first question all of you should of asked it... How much do you have to spend?

Re: Some questions
Yeah, maybe a different motor could see gains... my TBS is supposed to add 10Hp and improve fuel economy, it doesnt.
Re: Some questions
Thanks for the replies. I did some reading and want to change my question, how would I add more torque? I don't mean intake, headers, or exhaust, but maybe engine work? Man I'm new to modifying, I had a '02 maxima and didn't modify anything, didn't need to.
Re: Some questions
The bottom end, as used here, is the big part of the engine. It's the block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, and all the ancillaries. Pretty much everything but the head. There are some guys on k20a.org that will sell you a bottom end for a good price, I've heard. If you want more specific information about the K20 and K24 series of engines, I'd head over there.
